water because it"s polluted (被污染), and who has watched lives slipped away (消失) from her father, little
brother and sister because the family is too poor to see a doctor. She would gladly walk miles to school, but her

To help Maria most, your money is put together with that of other sponsors. Building schools, hospitals,
bringing in clean water is what "Save the Children" has been working on since 1932.

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。     Most new babies were born in the developing countries. These countries are found in Africa, South America
and parts of Asia. In the developed countries of Europe and North America, the population is growing very
slowly. This is because women in these countries have, on average (平均), only one or two children. In the
developing countries, many women have five or more children. In 1950, about one quarter of the world"s

people do not have enough food to eat and they live in poor housing conditions. Children get little time at school
and suffer (遭受痛苦) from many kinds of diseases.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the world"s population was around six billion. The U.N. has said that the
world"s population will level off (平稳下降) at 12.5 billion by the year 2100. Other groups think the world"s
population will continue to grow, reaching 14 billion before it becomes stable (稳定的), or even falls.

"Tom? Are you in bed yet?" called Mrs.White. There was no answer. Mrs. White put down her book and
went to her 14-year-old son"s room. Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen on which a motorbike
was running fast.
"Oh, Tom. You"re still playing on that computer game. You must stop now, it"s half past eleven. If you don"t

"You"re always playing on the computer. You spend more time on this machine than on your homework."
Today more and more families have computers. Parents hope computers can help their children improve
their study at school. But many of their children use computers to play games and watch videos instead of
studying. We often see that computer net bars are crowded with people, especially young boys. They spend a lot
of money competing (竞争) with the computerized (用计算机控制的) machines. The more they lose, the more
they want to win. The result is that they don"t want to work or study.
In some countries, even scientists hate computers. They say computers cause millions of people to lose their
jobs or cause them a lot of trouble. Computer game addiction (瘾) is a serious problem in social (社会的) life.
