But Ham"s 15 was the most important. The chimpanzee"s (黑猩猩) would tell the most 16 how a
human astronaunt might react in space. And Ham had been especially trained to 17 all the actions that
would make a 18 of how a clever creature would 19 in space. He had been trained for all the things
he might 12 to on the flight-dimlight (昏暗的光线), great noise, greater speed.
Don"t listen to people who say that young people today often think only of themselves. It"s not true at all.
More and more young people in the USA volunteer (自愿) to spend their school holidays working for others.
And they don"t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I"m going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It"s going to be terrific —I"ll
spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I"m going to sleep under the stars.
It will be a nice sport, and I"ll be able to do something good at the same time!
Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I"m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and
sell them to families that are not very rich. They"ll teach me what to do, so I"ll help people and also have a chance

Trish Anderson, 16

about my 1 hobbies.
My hobby is collecting stamps. When I began, I tried to collect the stamps of all 2 , but there were
too many, so now I collect only US and Chinese ones. I 3 a lot of friends in the US, so I often get letters
from them. Some of my stamps are very pretty and some are unusual. We can 4 a lot from stamps, such
as the history of the countries.
My younger brother, Peter, likes 5 trains. He often goes to the station nearby and watches them
carefully. 6 a train goes through the station, he writes down its name and number.
My sister"s hobby is sewing. She has no sewing machine, 7 she doesn"t have to worry about it —
she can use my mother"s. She makes most of her 8 herself, and when I tear (撕坏) my shirt or my
trousers, I always ask her for 9 .
My father has a hobby, too. It is walking the 10 . Every morning and afternoon he goes walking
with his handsome dog.
so, here are some suggestions you need to know about audience manners.
Most sporting arenas (赛场) have rules for audience which are written on the back of the tickets. Read
your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don"t
walk about when a game is being held. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other
rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don"t criticize (批评) the performance of players and
coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Applause is a special form of body language you can use to communicate (交流) with players. But you
should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them; don"t go on for
too long. After an excellent performance, applaud (鼓掌) warmly.
Applause is not welcome, however, while a game is being held and the players need to focus all their
attention. Different sports have different rules for the audience. Enjoying artistic gymnastics (艺术体操) requires
silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. Using flash (闪光灯) to take photos is
quite disturbing to tennis players. Mobile phones can not be used in shooting centers.
To be a good spectator (观众), you should take time to learn the game — related rules and audience
manners of each event.
B. complain about the bad performance of players from time to time
C. arrive at the sporting arenas just before the start of the event
D. walk here and there when a game is being held
looks at you. Or you have a piece of cabbage in your teeth! What do the American and British teens find
embarrassing and how do they react (回应) to it?
One big embarrassing thing for them is answering personal questions. If you ask "How old are you?"
or "How much money do you make?", they"ll get angry. It"s polite to stop asking. If you meet someone
for the first time, talk about something not personal, such as your neighborhood or school. British people
love to talk about weather.
British and American teens feel embarrassed if they still rise their parents"money to buy clothes or
have to ask their parents before making a decision, because others will laugh at them.
In some situations, if you look bad in public, don"t worry. A child may forget and call his or her teacher
"mom" in class. A good laugh is a good way out of it! Sometimes you find that you don"t have enough
money when you pay at the supermarket. Just put some things back quickly. If you explain too much,
you"ll attract a lot of attention!
Honesty always works best. If you forget the name of a person, or don"t know how to clean the toilet
after using it at your friend"s home, just ask them about it.
B.How do you like your neighborhood?
C.How much pocket motley do you have?
D.What do you think of your school?
