I"m very happy to be your guest speaker today. It is a great pleasure to visit your school and meet all of
you here. I would like to tell you all by myself. I have been a reporter for the past fifteen years. I chose this
job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes
difficult. I have seen wars, earthquakes, poverty (贫穷) and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and
happiness.
In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were very young and lived in
the streets. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. In a year, she was looking
after two hundred children, feeding them, teaching them and giving them hope.
Another time, I was in Japan after a terrible earthquake. In a place, I found an old lady whose house
fell down. Her son was missing and people around her said that there was no chance that her son was alive.
But the lady did not give up hope. For four days, she kept moving heavy stones by herself. She did not stop
until she found her son. He was still alive.
Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious illness. He had to have twenty operations in hospital.
But when I met him, he was still smiling. Now when my life is difficult, I always remember the courage
of the three people.

holidays with my uncle and aunt in their house by the sea. It was only twenty meters from the water.
Every day we put on our swimming shorts before breakfast, ran down to the sea and jumped in. From
then until late in the afternoon we were in the sea of the time. When our aunt rang the bell, we went back
to the house for food, but we ate it in our swimming shorts and were soon back in the sea again. The
water was warm, the sun shone every day and on most days there were no waves. In the middle of the
day a wind always began to blow, but it was not strong.
Three times during our holidays we had strong winds. They made big waves in the sea. But we were
all good swimmers and didn"t stop swimming until we were tired and happy.

When I was a boy, each of my holidays seemed wonderful. My parents took me by train or by car to
a hotel by the 1 . All day I played on the sands with strange excited children. We made houses and
gardens, and 2 the tide (潮水) destroy them. When the tide went out, we 3 over the rocks and
looked down at the 4 in the rock pools.
In those days, the sun seemed to shine always brightly 5 the water was always warm. Sometimes
we left beach and walked in the country, 6 destroyed houses and dark woods. There were sweets in
one"s pockets or good places one could buy ice creams. Each day seemed a lifetime.
Though I am thirty-five years old, my 7 of good holiday is much the same as it was. I still like the
sun and warm sand and the sound of waves beating the rocks. I never wish to build any sand house or
sand garden 8 , I love the sea and often feel sand running through my fingers.
Sometimes I wonder what my ideal 9 will be like when I am old. All I want to do then, perhaps, will
be to lie in bed, reading books about children who make houses and gardens with sand, who watch the
incoming tide, who make themselves 10 because of too many ice creams.
