Summer camps started from the US. They are programs for teenagers during the summer months in
some countries. Teenagers who take part in summer camps are known as campers. The traditional summer
camp usually means hiking, game-playing and campfires. Now modern summer camps can offer campers
a great many activities. Among them, the intemational summer camp is quite popular, especially with Chinese
campers.
First of all, the intemational summer camp can bring campers unusual life experience. As we all know,
the experience in high school plays a very important role in life. The international summer camp is a great
way to establish (确立) the right values for life. Campers will experience the cultural difference-something
they can"t get at home from their families. During the international summer camp, children will become more
independent and see new things. They can also leam more through talking with students from all over the
world.
Making friends is another point. The intemational summer camp mixes (混合) Chinese students with
students from other countries in the world. No matter whether they live with a local family or live with other
students in dormitories (宿舍), they will all share experiences and cultures with persons from different
countries and cultural backgrounds, learn cross-culture communication skills by listening to others and
expressing themselves, and improve friendship over several weeks. They often stay in touch with each
other by email,MSN or QQ after the program finishes.
The most exciting thing in the intemational summer camp is that Chinese campers can get excellent
chances to speak and use English in a real English world. Language is not only knowledge; it is a skill which
needs to be improved by using it. Campers from English-speaking countries are very friendly, warm-hearted
and helpful.

I started my food blog (博客) Chubby Hubby in 2005. At the time, we were preparing a wnter"s festival.
The chairman wanted to have popular blogs to publicize it. As most of us had no idea what a blog was then,
he suggested that we start our own blogs, just to get an idea.
It wasn"t until much later that I realized I was the only one to do so. A food blog was a good choice for
me. When I first started the blog, I was surprised to find there were others who shared the same hobby in
good food as I did. I became interested in this community (团体). Over the last four years, it"s been pleasant
to watch this hobby tum into something that people do as a duty. If you are thinking of starting one, here are
some suggestions:
Decide who you"re talking to. This will decide how the blog voices.
Be honest. People like to read blogs because they are highly personal insights (洞悉) into people"s lives and
interests. If you tell lies, your readers will lose interests.
Care about design (设计). For food blogs, photography is important. Basic skills help make your blog better.
1. The writer started his food blog because _____.
A. he had read other people"s
B. he took food as his hobby
C. someone asked him to do it
D. the festival was held online
2. How does the writer like writing blogs?
A. He enjoys it so much.
B. He likes it just a little.
C. He thinks it"s tiring.
D. He thinks it"s his job.
3. What does the second suggestion tell us?
A. To decide who you"re talking to.
B. To make sure you are honest.
C. To care about how to design blogs.
D. To know what basic skills are.

Jason Crole studies in an American high school. As a native of London, the 16-year-old didn"t know much
about America"s colonial (殖民地的) past before this summer.
But now Crole can talk a lot about the settlers (移民者), slavery (奴隶制) and the events that led up to the
American Revolution (美国独立战争). He learned about these subjects at a summer program at the College of
William and Mary, Virginia.
It is a 70-year-old program that gathers high school students from across the US to study early American
history.
"It"s been great and a lot of hard work," said Crole. "This is not a subject really  taught in England, so I"m
learning a lot of new things."
The program meet from 8 am to 3 pm five days a week. It goes for three weeks. Students go to lectures
and read essays about the time period they are studying. They study history from the founding of Jamestown
through the American Revolution and the Civil War (美国内战).
As well as leaming about history in the classroom, students also take field trips to historical sites. They visit
Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and other sites around Virginia. They learn what life was like during that
time.
"We hope the students can really leam something about our early history," said Carolyn Sparks Whittenburg,
director of the program. " We offer the program to kids who love history. A total of 111 students were in the
program this summer, but we hope for more next year."

How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but
have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily. we do miss so many of its
best moments.
We take johs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that this
style of life is merely a temporary (暂时的) state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then,
at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize
that all those years waiting for real life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English: "Have a nice day." They speak slowly and
seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to
enjoy the moment.
How often do we say to ourselves, "I"ll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) when I get a higher
position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectahle job at The Daily
Telegraph to go and work for a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to
me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in
central London for a small local area? I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under
continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern
Region trains.
1. The underlined phrase "turn his back on" most prohably means "________".
A. give up
B. keep on
C. try out
D. look for
2. The man preferred working for a small newspaper partly because ________.
A. something had gone wrong with his mind
B. he wanted to have more time to enjoy life
C. he would have more chances to make money
D. he liked travelling on Southern Region trains
3. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Find a Good Job
B. Wait for Real Life
C. Value This Very Day
D. Get a Higher Position
