阅读理解。     You may have heard of the famous saying, "East or West, home is the best."
What does the word "home" mean to you? How do you say the word in French? In Chinese? In your
language? Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation. It"s
not surprising, because the idea of home is"different from country to country, and from person to person.
A home is more than a roof and four walls. It"s the cooking, eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go
on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold
northern Europe, there"s a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where
the sun shines a lot and it"s more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone
floors.
We asked some people about their homes.
How often do people move house in your country?
"In my country many people don"t stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten
years or so."
                                                                                                                       -Cherry, Boston, USA.
What a e features (特征) of homes in your country?
"In Britain, even in town, there"s always a garden. We have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But we
don"t often have balconies (阳台). The weather isn"t warm enough!"
-Pat, Exeter, England 1. The word "home" sometimes has no exact translation because _____. A. people can"t find this word in the dictionary

D. people can"t understand each other very well 2. According to the passage, at home, you can do everything except _____. A. making friends
B. cooking and eating
C. playing and talking
D. sleeping and relaxing 3. Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe?  A. Because they want to breathe fresh air outside.
B. Because there"s a fire in the living room.
C. Because they wear heavy clothes all day long.
D. Because the sun there shines a lot. 4. From the second paragraph, what kind of homes people have depends on _____. A. whether they are rich or not
B. the climate (气候) they have

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容。补全表格中所缺的信息。      Many kinds of birds live in the United States, but the number of the birds is becoming smaller every year.
One of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats. By keeping your pet cats in your home, you
can help give birds a better possible chance to live.
Of the 90 million pet cats in this country, about two-thirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these
cats kill hundreds of millions of birds each year, as well as billions of small animals such as rabbits and field
mice.
They can also bring illness to the animals that live in people"s yard (院子), further weakening the health
of the natural populations.
Allowing pet cats to go outside is not just bad for birds and wildlife, it"s also bad for the cats themselves.
Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. They are in danger from traffic and attacks (攻击) from other animals.
In fact, outdoor cats usually don"t live past the age of five, while indoor cats often live to be 17 or older.
Keep your pet cat inside! If you raise a young cat, it"s your duty to let it play inside.

                       Advice
① Hi _________, Why should
your parents do all the washing-up?
You should help around the house-it"s
only fair. I don"t think you should
change your looks though. Young
people should look like young people.

②Hi_________, Wearing your hair
pulled back in a ponytail (马尾辫) will
help keep it out of your mouth. When
you feel like chewing something, try
bubble gum (泡泡糖). Give yourself
time and you should be able to break
this habit. The first few days are usually
the hardest. Good luck!
③Hi ________, Don"t worry
about it so much! Phone your
friend up as usual and she
won"t be able to refuse you.
I am sure you will get along
well with each other.
Everything will be fine.

babies may have something to push that makes sounds. This kind of book may make animal sounds. Then

were willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Quite a few dream of becoming famous, perhaps famous
sportspeople or singers. Some said they"d love to go on exciting trips; one student said she"d love to sail
across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that are impossible; three students said they"d like to
