Students do not go to school during these two months. Most American families like 2 during their
summer vacation.
Many families take their lunch to a park or 3 far from the city. They like to eat where there
are many trees or a nice lake. 4 they live near the sea, they often go to the beach. But for the others
they don"t like to 5 one or two weeks at one of the big seaside towns.
Why do people like going to the beach? I think it is the sand, the sea and the sun. Of course, there
are lots of new things to see, nice things 6 and exciting(令人兴奋的) things to do , but it is the feeling
of sand under one"s feet , of salty water one"s skin, and of the warm sun on one"s back that makes the
seaside what it is.
Many 7 like to meet people from other countries like Mexico(墨西哥)or Canada. Some people
have 8 time and money to travel to other countries like France Japan. They usually 9 to these
countries on planes. The United States is a very 10 country. Lots of families travel by car or by train
to see 11 places in their own country. People 12New York,Chicago,San Francisco and Los Angeles. These big cities have many famous buildings , theatres, stores and other 13 of interest for tourists(游客). Certainly not everyone likes to go to busy cities. Some families travel to the mountains or to beautiful
countries. They usually 14 a camera and video(录像机), and return with a lot of nice pictures and tapes
of the places they visit. Then they would share(分享)them 15 their friends.

Dear sir,
I am writing to introduce myself, with the hope of getting the job you advertised in Daily News.
When I was a child, I was fond of English and always got good grades. In1994, after six years of hard
work in Beijing No.4 Middle School, I entered People"s University. I studied English there for four years.
Luckily, I got my first job when I graduated. I taught English in Beijing No.4 Middle School from 1998
to 2001. Then I got the chance to receive further education in University of Hawaii in the US. That was a
precious experience of my life. I learnt a lot during those two years, especially the differences between
eastern and western cultures.
I came back to People"s University in 2003. I worked as an assistant (助手) for 2 years and then as
a professor. So far I have got 8 years of working experience.
I won lots of awards. I was an"Excellent Student" of People"s University in 1997, and an "Outstanding
Teacher" of Beijing No.4 middle school in 2000.
Thank you for reading my letter, and I will appreciate it very much if you can reply soon.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Gang

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer. ● Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn"t walk alone outside. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily. ● Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting it on your back. When a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back. ● If you are followed by someone you don’t know , cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don"t go home at once. You are safer in the street , but it is dangerous for you to be alone in your home or in lift(电梯). ● If you have to take a bus to a place faraway, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves. This stops other people from studying you. On the bus, don"t sit alone. Sit behind the driver or with other people. Don’t sleep.

The time may be 10 am in Beijing and 2 am in New York. It is set on the same time-Greenwich Mean Time. This is because in 1884, many nations met to decide how to prevent the confusion (混乱) made by almost every town having its own time. Such a time rule was devised (设计) by Sir Sanford Fleming (1827-1915). He was an engineer who lived in Canada. He held a meeting in 1884 to discuss the time problem. He suggested that there should be 24 meridians (子午线) dividing the world int0 24 time zones (时区). The zero meridian would pass through the village of Greenwich near London. The time at Greenwich would be called Greenwich Mean Time, and at each of the 24 meridian lines, the time would go forward or backwards by one hour. Twenty-seven nations agreed to this suggestion, and since then GMT has been the centre of time-keeping for all nations. Most nations have only one time zone. However, large nations such as the USA and Australia are divided into several time zones.
