how hot or cold it was. The following experiment shows how easy it was to make a mistake (错误).
Take three glasses: the first one with hot water, the second one with very cold water and the third
one with water at room temperature. Then you put a finger of one hand in the hot water, and a finger
of the other hand in the cold water. You hold your fingers in the two glasses for a minute. Then you use
the two fingers, one after another, to see how hot or cold the water in the third glass is. You will find that
the water is warm to the finger that was in the cold water before, but the finger which was in the hot water will feel cold in the third glass of water.
You will often make a mistake if you take something that seems to you for a real fact. That is why
you must always find the temperature in a scientific way. You must not try to tell the temperature as it

When I first came to Shenzhen, the first thing that surprised me most was the
newspaper. We can see people reading newspapers everywhere, on the bus or on
the street. Newspapers play an important part in China. Reporters who get their
news first will have the market and win.
I myself like reading newspapers very much, both in English and in Chinese,
as readers, we enjoy being in a sea of news every day, But few of us are sure
about the importance of the reporters, who help people when they are in trouble.
We get much closer to the world because of them. They are the pioneers! And I
love brave reporters, who must be the greatest people in the world. For their
readers, sometimes they are in danger; each year a certain number of reporters
die for their jobs all over the world. I feel so sad for that. With China"s entry into
the WTO, reporters will play a more important part.
Sincerely yours,
Lee

That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see
them better.
Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your
hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the balls are; You can feel how, heavy
the glass is.
When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.
With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the
difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water
on the back of your hand, too.
You can even feel sounds against your skin, Have you ever wanted to know
why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of
music.
All children soon learn what "don"t touch!" means. They hear it often. Yet
most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we
might buy such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well we have to
touch it.
The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know his when you walk
on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your
eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your
feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel
these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some
things to touch. Their signs say "Do touch!" There you can feel everything on
show.

I read in my magazine that you are looking for a pen pal, so I"m writing to say hello.
My name"s Alice Nichols and I"m 16. I live in Hania in Greece, but my family comes from England.
Hania is a beautiful old town near the island of Crete. In summer the town is full of tourists.
I"m a student at a private school. I"ve been at the same school for five years now, so I know it very
well. Most of the time I like going to school, but there are some things I can"t stand doing-like PE. I
enjoy playing sports, but I don"t like doing exercises! My favorite subjects are geography and English.
I often go to the beach in my free time. I love just sitting around and talking to friends. I"m getting
better at understanding boys, but I hate listening to hours of talk about football. It"s just so boring!
What"s life like in your town? I"d love to hear all about your family and friends. Have you got an
e-mail address? It"s easier to keep in touch that way.
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes!
Alice
