badly in his studies. When she reviewed Teddy"s past records, she find he was a good child at first, but he began to change when his mother got ill. Finally he lost interest in school after his mother"s death.
Mrs.Thompson realized the problem and felt sorry for him.She felt even worse when her students
brought her beautifully- covered Christmas presents. His presents were covered with some old paper.
Some children laughed when she found a bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle with a little perfume(香水). But she said how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some perfume on her hand.Teddy stayed after schoul for a long time just to say,"Mrs.Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to."After the child left, she cried for quite a long time.
On that very day,she taught not only knowledge but also children. As she worked with Teddy, his mind seemed to come alive. By the end of the year,Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.
A year later, Teddy left school. She found a note under her door, from Teddy, saying that she was the
best teacher he ever had in his life. After that, these words were repeated in each of his letters to her. Then after he finished college, Teddy wrote telling her that he had met a pretty girl and was going to get married. He explained that his father was dead, and that he wondered if Mrs.Thompson might sit at the wedding in
the place for the mother of the groom(新郎).
Of course, Mrs.Thompson did. She wore the bracelet and the perfume that Teddy remembered his
mother wearing on their last Christmas together.
They hugged (拥抱) each other, and Teddy whispered in Mrs.Thompson"s ear, " Thank you, Mrs.
Thompson, for making me feel important, and showing me that I could make a difference. " Mrs.
Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back," Teddy,it"s not like that. You were the one who taught

experience to study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn"t know how different textbook
English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say," I am fine" when people say "How are you?" But in the US, I
found that people say, "I am good" or "I"m tired".
One day, someone greeted me with "What"s up?" It made me confused . I thought for a moment and then smiled
because I didn"t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try
every possible way to get their skin paler, or "whiter".
I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we
study hard and that"s it. But here, a "good" student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or
music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that
I have never thought about sports.

done with the students. But the staff sees a lot of parents, too.
"Parents meetings make clear monthly diagram(图表)."says Mildred Freman, head of the Guidance. "This diagram
stays much the same from year to year. The busy months are October, March and May. "
September, the beginning of a new school year, starts rather slowly. Few parents come in. Most of these want to
talk about the schedules. October brings many problems caused by some students. Some parents are called in. Others
come by themselves. Things quiet down in November. December is a quiet month. "It"s the holiday. "Ms Foreman
says, "People want to come in, I know, but they decide to wait until after New Year"s Day. "
Report cards go home just before Christmas holidays. Bad marks bring parents in as school opens again. This
happens again in March, another report card month. May is always the year"s busiest month. That"s when parents
begin to think that their children may be asked to stay in the same grade again. They come in to see if anything can
be done before things are decided in June.

Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe (欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on
their TVs and shop for clothes, food, toys and many other things.
Tele-shopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells
different kind of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France
there are two about $20 million a year to buy things through those channels.
In Germany, until last year tele-shopping was only possible on one channel for l hour every day. Then
the government (政府) allowed more tele-shopping. Other channels can open far tele-business, including
(包括) the largest American tele-shopping company and a 24-hour tele-shopping company. German
businesses are hoping this new tele-shopping will help them sell more things.
Some people like tele-shopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their
homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time,
other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call tele-shopping "Junk (垃圾) on the air".
Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality
is important to them, and they believe they can not be sure about the quality of the things on TV.
The need for high quality means that European tele-shopping companies will have to be different from
the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They
will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers can not touch or see in person.

Making a film takes a long time and is very hard work. Writing the story for the film may take many
weeks. Filming the story being acted — or shooting the film as it is called — often takes at least six
months. Actors and cameramen work from very early in the morning till late at night. Each scene has to
be acted and reacted, filmed and refilmed, until it is just right. Sometimes the same scene may have to be
acted twenty or thirty times. The film studio is like a large factory, and the indoor stages are very big
indeed. Scenery of all kinds is made in the studio: churches, houses, castles, and forest are all built of
wood and cardboard (纸板盒). Several hundred people work together to make one film. Some of these
people are actors and actresses. The director of the film, however, is the most important person in a film
studio. He decides how the scenes should be filmed and how the actors should act.
Most people go to see a film because they know the film stars in it. Sometimes the film may be very
poor. It is best to choose a film made by a good director. Some famous directors make their films very
real. People feel that they themselves are among the people in the film.
