这里为什么第一句用in the desert 第二句用on the desert?

第一句话,“也许你会认为在世界上沙漠里面只有沙子”,这里的in只是一个介词,并没有和后面的the desert形成什么搭配.只是在表示前文的sand是在desert里面的.
第二句话,“这些动物以沙漠中的植物为食而且不需要任何的水”,这里的on适合前文的live形成固定搭配,即live on,意思是“以.为食”,“靠...生存”,这里的plant不是动词,而是名词,表示植物.
所以两个句子中的in和on都没有和desert搭上什么关系,只是一个做单纯的介词,另外一个是live on的固定搭配.
