According tyo some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come in for a "soft landing" followed by a gradual increase in business activity.这个句子是正确选项 但是我不明白为什么要用 had feared 不是直接过去式就够了吗?

后面有clue,'earlier in the year',就是说大家的fear 发生在recession的前期.如果画一根时间轴的话,现在是说这句话的时候,过去就是recession 的时期,在过去就是recession的前期 "earlier in the year",最关键的词是 'earlier',而不是用 'early','earlier' 表示'再早'的意思,所以这里用过去完成时.
