材料力学作为应用力学的一个分支,研究的是固体在受到各种外部力或力矩作用时的反应（此处roading拼错,应为loading）.对这方面的研究曾经有多种命名方法,包括“材料强度”和“可变形体力学”.本书内所研究的固体包括：受轴向应力以及轴向力矩（此处rorsion应该为torsion）的薄壳、梁和圆柱体,以及这些物体对外界力和力矩的反应.一般来讲外界的力和力矩来自于负载.如果我们能够得出可能造成破坏的负载的具体数值,那么就可以很好的保证物体在外加负载下不受损.
