阅读理解。     I know what you"re thinking: Pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night"s leftovers
in the a.m. if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say
they don"t have time, others think they"re "saving" calories, still others just don"t like breakfast food.
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you"re trying to lose weight. "Eating
just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all," says Katherine Brooking, R.D.,
who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year"s "SELF CHALLENGE". And even pizza can be healthy
if it"s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows
that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern
California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have
a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast
altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night"s leftovers-it may sound crazy,
but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, "You can always eat it tomorrow," I put away the leftovers
instead of eating more that night. Try it... you may save yourself some pre- bedtime calories. And watch your
body gain the fat-burning effects. 1. The word "leftovers" in Paragraph l probably means ____. A. food remaining after a meal
B. things left undone
C. meals made of vegetables
D. pizza topped with fruit 2. What can we infer from the text? A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.
B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
D. Eating vegetables helps save energy. 3. According to the last paragraph, it is important to ____.A. eat something for breakfast
B. be careful about what you eat
C. heat up food before eating it
D. eat calorie-controlled food 4. The text is written mainly for those ____. A. who go to work early
B. who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late
D. who eat before sleep
答案
1-4: A B A B

better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly-up 12 percent
from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they
would be more attractive and confident if they were more active.
It is hard not to get the message. The virtues of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage
stamps, and television ads of everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did
not catch on until the late 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of" doing
regular physical exercises. Growing publicity (宣传) for races held in American cities helped fuel a strong
interest in the ancient sport of running. Although running has leveled off in recent years as Americans have
discovered equally rewarding-and sometimes safer- forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running
remains the most popular form of exercise.
As the popularity of exercise continues to mount, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The key
to fitness is exercising the major muscle groups vigorously (强有力地) enough to approximately double the
heart rate and keep it doubled for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three times or more
a week will produce considerable improvements in physical health in about three months. 1. It can be learnt from the passage that the health benefits of exercise ____.A. are to be further studied
B. are self-evident
C. are yet to be proved
D. are supported by scientific evidence 2. A growing interest in sports developed after ____. A. an increasing number of races were held in American cities
B. research showed their health benefits
C. scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV ads
D. people got the message from magazine covers and postage stamps 3. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Exercise-The Road to Health
B. Scientific Evidence of Health Benefits
C. Different Forms of Exercise
D. Running-A Popular Form of Sport 4. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase "leveled off" in the paragraph 2? A. Reached its lowest level in popularity.
B. Stopped being popular.
C. Stopped increasing in popularity.
D. Become very popular.

changes to his personal lifestyle and official schedule. The prince will replace carbon-heavy private jets
and helicopters with scheduled flights and train services.
The move came as Prince Charles urged business leaders to publish the environmental pact of their
activities.
He said, "Few accountants and business decision-makers ask, "How much of our critical natural resource
is left? How many miles of polar ice cap has our business helped melt this year? By how many inches
have we raised sea levels? How many species have we put at risk? How many homes will be flooded, how
many people will die of thirst or starvation because of our activities?" These are not comfortable questions,
but, by Cod, they need to be asked."
He added, "At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone"s books... Yet they are real, they are
incurred now and in a relatively short time, the damage being caused may be beyond remedy (补救)." He
said the world was "running up the biggest global credit card debt in history, but with little or no thought
for how the bill will ever be paid".

associated with activities at all three of his residences. Clarence House in London, Highgrove and Birkhall
on the Balmorals estate (庄园 ), as well as the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff. Measures
include a review of electricity use, commuter and other staff travel and are intended to identify further
reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The review will report in June, when Clarence House will announce
annual targets to reduce carbon emission. 1. How does Prince Charles feel about business leaders in terms of environmental protection? A. Dissatisfied.

Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with
the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than
on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green-space in
the urban environment is a first step on the right way; this does not mean, however, that enough details
are known about the functions of greenspaces in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants (居民)
are using these spaces.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been
used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate (不成比例的) attention
for forms of recreation far from home, whereas (但是) there was relatively little attention for improvement
of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this
is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for
activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door
of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design
of these has to be such that more obligatory(强制性的) activities can also have a recreative aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the
children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping
you can nowhere find a spot of enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself
at home after the street door of your house is closed after you. 1. According to the author, the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment ____. A. is still unknown
B. is being closely studied
C. is usually neglected
D. has been fully recognized 2. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to ____. A. the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighborhood
B. all of the recreation facilities far from home
C. relatively little attention for recreative possibilities
D. the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighborhood 3. The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of greenspaces should be provided ____. A. in special areas
B. in the suburbs
C. in the neighbourhood of the home
D. in gardens and parks 4. The author says "more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect" to ____. A. suggest that obligatory activities don"t need to serious
B. show that recreation activities are very important
C. show how recreation activities have spread wildly
D. suggest how to offer recreation activities around home 5. Why would someone only feel himself at home according to the last paragraph? A. One lives the very best standard of living.
B. There are too many distractions outside his home.
C. There are few recreations around his house.
D. One needs the street door of his house to be opened always.

sometimes they even painfully pull. But for all the work they do for us, we are still unable to crown one
as "the strongest muscle".
Instead, a few muscles could claim the title, depending on how strength is measured.
If the title goes to the muscle that can exert the most force, the victor would be the soleus (小腿肚肌),
according to Gray"s "Anatomy". Without this muscle, we wouldn"t be able to stand, walk, run or shake
our bodies on the dance floor. If the soleus was not continuously pulling, we would always be falling over
ourselves (although some of us tend to do that from time to time anyway).
But perhaps the title should go to the muscle that exerts the most pressure. Pressure is different from
force-pressure takes into account the area over which a force is exerted. The muscle that takes the prize
for delivering the greatest amount of pressure is the masseter, or the jaw muscle, according to the book
"Clinical Oral Science" (Reed Educational and Professional Publishing, 1998).
In 1986, Richard Hofmann of Lake City, Fla., achieved a bite strength of 975 pounds for two seconds,
setting a Guinness Record. Talk about jaw dropping! The jaw is able to clench (咬紧) and chew because
of the masseter muscle.
Others may argue the muscles used in childbirth are the most powerful.
When it comes to versatility, perhaps the tongue is the strongest muscle. Its combination of elasticity
(伸缩性) and forcefulness gives us the ability to speak, eat and kiss-all things very desirable on a first date.
However dexterous (灵巧的) it may be though, its power does not match that of muscles such as the soleus.
If slow and steady wins the race, the heart is certainly a contender for the title. When it contracts, the
muscle pumps about 2 ounces of blood, and is constantly working over a lifetime. Beating about 40 million
times a year, a person"s heart will beat approximately 2. 5 billion times by the time of their 70th birthday. 1. According to the passage, the underlined word "contender" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to
   "____" A. failure
B. partner
C. muscle
D. competitor 2. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. What"s the strongest muscle in the human body?
B. Who is the strongest person in the world?
C. What are the functions of different muscles?
D. What are the standards of the strongest muscle? 3. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Without the soleus, we could still stand, walk, run or shake our bodies on the dance floor.
B. A few muscles could be the winners, according to different measures.
C. The muscles used in childbirth are the most powerful.
D. The tongue is the strongest muscle for delivering the greatest amount of pressure. 4. What would be discussed in following paragraph?  A. Another possible strongest muscle.
B. The conclusion of the strongest muscles.
C. The functions of different muscles.
D. The Guinness Record of the strongest muscle.
