can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight.
Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live.
This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering
plants and non-flowering plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some
have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a
fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants don"t grow from seeds. They grow from spores. Spores are so small and light
that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as the seeds. When these spores fall
on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.
B. plants cannot grow without air
C. there are many plants around us
D. we cannot live without water
B. All fruits have seeds in them.

C. 多花的
D. 不开花的
B. a lot of water

to friends who have travelled to the places. Or you can go and see a color film. Or you can read travel books.
It would seem that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective
(主观的) account of travels which the author has actually made himself. If they are informative and have a
good index (索引), then they can be useful to you when you are planning your travels. The second kind are
those books whose purpose is to give a purely objective (客观的) description of things to be done and seen.
If a well-read, cultured person has written such a book, then it is even more useful. It can be sorted as a
selected guide book. The third kind are those books which are called"a guide" to some place or other. If they
are good, they will, in addition to their factual information, give an analysis or an explanation. Like the first
kind they can be inspiring and interesting. But their basic purpose is to help the reader who wishes to plan in
the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose you must make sure that it does not describe everything as
"wonderful", "excellent" or"magical". You must also note its date of publication because travel is a very
practical affair and many things change quickly in the twenty-first century. Finally, you should make sure
that the contents are well presented and easy to find.
B. how to buy travel books
C. how to read a travel book
D. travel books
B. the book which tells you what is worth doing and seeing based on the facts
C. the book in which a lot of big adjectives are used to draw your attention
D. the book which offers you a lot of useful information like a tour guide
B. the price of the book is always changing
C. the author of the book may be different
D. the contents of the book are always the same
since1991, and I really wanted to understand him and his music. 1 I was very patient, and that helped me
a lot in the process of learning English by myself.
Actually, I can"t describe the techniques I used to learn it, because it was almost automatic for me to start
understanding English after a period of hard work trying to translate texts, dialogues and songs. 2
One thing that I can say is that I started learning English through comparing patterns and observing the
language structure, comparing it to Portuguese and trying to memorize rules. 3 Another thing that helped
me a lot is the fact that I would spend hours studying the uses, tenses, etc. of the words I could notice.
4 It was the hardest part of the process for me, because the only source I had was music, although I
used a pronunciation dictionary, too.
5 Later on I entered UFMG and really started studying English. Today I"m a teacher at an English Course,
and I really enjoy it, because I can improve my English each day.
B. So I really can"t say exactly how I"ve achieved proficiency (熟练).
C. With the help of my teacher, I learned pronunciation well.
D. So I can say that a strong will is the key to my success.
E. After having a large vocabulary, I started working on pronunciation.
F. And I used to make lists of words in order to memorize them and their meanings.
G. I used to use a dictionary to find the meaning of each word in songs written by him.
Young people should know the basics of renting accommodation before they hand over their money.
◎Deal with agent: In many cases, you"ll have to work with an agent before finding an apartment,
because they have all the information. Find a large, reputable property agent. Small agents (especially those
that are unregistered), might cheat you by offering a good place with low rent. In many cases, they"ll ask
for commission (佣金) before showing you the apartment. And they"ll raise the rent afterwards.
◎Before you rent: Make sure you read the rental agreement carefully and ask for advice about anything
you don"t understand. Make sure that once you sign a rental contract, you will receive a copy. Keep all the
paperwork you receive, such as receipts for rent and paid bills. They are proofs. If dispute arises, they will
be vital.
◎Upfront costs: Moving into rental accommodation can be fairly expensive to start. You will usually be
asked for three month"s rent in advance and a deposit (押金),which is one month"s rent. If the place is not
fully furnished, you may have to buy things like a mattress, refrigerator and washing machine. You need to
be financially prepared in advance.
◎Sharing with friends: If you intend to share an apartment with friends, make sure you discuss costs
and possible house rules before you make a promise. There will be ongoing expense, so consider collecting
separate contributions (定期缴款) towards regular bills such as electricity, phone or gas. Put this money
into a special purpose bank account.
◎Damage control: If any damage is made to your apartment either by you or your visitors, whether it
is accidental or not, make sure you tell your landlord about it. Remember, you are required to leave the
place in the same condition as when you moved in. You will have to pay for any damage that is not
considered to be reasonable"wear and tear".
◎Before you move out: You usually need to tell the landlord one month in advance. Clean your room
(or apartment) before you leave. Ask for a refund (return) of your deposit.
B. knows where there are houses to rent
C. may ask the landlord for commission
D. will help you sign a favourable contract
B. at most $400
C. more than $400
D. as mush as possible
B. Collect separate money in advance
C. Pay in turn
D. Contribute separately
B. the apartment clean
C. the apartment as you like
D. the idea of "wear and tear"
that"s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn"t matter if the words
come from someone else or ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We"re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really
shouldn"t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This"self-talk" helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.
Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we
should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on
the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying
"Good job!"
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should
be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store,
we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar
manner. However, harsh and critical language will most probably cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we
remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it
needed? If what we want to say doesn"t pass this test, then it"s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak
positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy
all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
B. inspiring words give us confidence
C. negative words may let us down
D. words have a lasting effect on us
B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D. it does no harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone
B. negative words may stimulate us to make more progress
C. people tend to remember friendly words
D. it is better to think twice before talking to others
who come to your house, it"s called homeschooling. A kid may be the only one, or he or she may be taught
with brothers, sisters, or kids from the neighborhood.
Parents choose to homeschool their children for many different reasons. 1 But more often, kids are
homeschooled because their parents feel they can give their child a better education than the local school
can. 2
If you don"t like school, homeschooling might seem like the perfect solution. But it"s better for everyone
if homeschooling isn"t chosen just as an escape from school or problems there, such as bullying. 3 Your
school counselor (顾问) and other school officials, such as the principal, often can help.
4 It"s true that kids must be educated, but it"s legal to be schooled at home in the US. In fact, more than
1 million students do it. These kids can learn just as they do in regular schools, but their parents are in charge
of their education.
5 The parents also may have to file paperwork with the state to explain who"s teaching the kid and
which subjects are being covered.
B. Sometimes a kid is sick and can"t go to regular school.
C. Finding solutions to the problem should be the first step.
D. Some people"s kids should attend public schools.
E. Homeschool parents must make sure that their kids get the instruction and the experiences they need.
F. You might wonder if kids have to go to school.
G. Parents also may choose homeschooling because they want their child"s education to include religious
instruction, which isn"t offered at public schools.
