     请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。每空格
一个单词。      Many animal lovers would like to do more to help animals, but aren"t sure where to start or feel like they
just don"t have the time. The good news is that there are many simple things you can do to help protect animals.
     Think twice before you decide
The decisions you make when it comes to eating meat or other animal products can go a long way toward
stopping the killing of animals. Consider eating a vegetarian (素食的) diet. If you aren"t ready to make this change, there are still things you can do. Do not buy animal products from companies known to use practices that
go against the law such as using drugs to increase milk production in cows.
     Help get the word out
Getting the word out about the problems faced by animals can be as easy as putting up a notice on your
car. Also, talk to your friends and family members about important issues that are related to animals. Give
some simple advice to a friend with a new pet about the serious pet over-population problem we"re facing. Turn
to some books on the subject if you are not so clear about the advice you give your friend.
     Write a letter
We"ve all heard the saying," The pen is more powerful than the sword". Put this idea to the protection of
animals. If a company has practices or rules that are harmful to animals, write them a letter to let them know
you are angry about them, and that you won"t buy their products until they make some changes. Write letters
to state and local legislators (立法者) to let them know how important it is that they support legislation that
protects animals. Make them know that their actions will have a great effect on your vote.
     Be more loving
If you"re considering adding a dog or a cat to your family, think about getting one from a homeless-animal
house rather than buying a pet. There are many wonderful animals just waiting for a home. By taking back an
animal from there, you will be helping in the fight against pet over-population, as well as giving your money to
those who are responsible for taking care of pitiful animals.
Let your actions be an example to others
It may sound simple, but one of the best ways to help animals is to let your actions speak to the world. You
should do the following things first by yourself: Treat all living creatures with respect. Care about your pets and
look after them well. Avoid (避免)entertainment places that use animals to perform. Support legislation (立法)
that protects animals. All of these things set an example for others to follow.                                                      Title: Ways of _  1__ animals

A lazy Susan is an addition to a table that is designed to assist in moving food from one person to another
while dining. This is achieved through the use of a turntable (转盘), which usually moves the food in a circle
when it is pushed by those at the table. In this way, the food never has to be picked up and passed around the
table. Instead, it remains in place on the lazy Susan.
A lazy Susan may also be a part of a kitchen cabinet (橱柜). In this sense, the lazy Susan is a type of
shelving unit within the cabinet that is able to turn around its axis (轴心). One may turn the lazy Susan in order
to find certain goods in storage. From the outside, a lazy Susan appears to be two cabinets that are located at
a right angle (直角) to each another. When one of these cabinets is pushed, however, both doors move and the
lazy Susan is revealed inside.
It is believed that Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan in the 18th century, though it was called
"dumbwaiter" at that time. It is said that Jefferson invented the lazy Susan because his daughter complained
she was always served last at table and, as a result, never found herself full when leaving the table. Others
believe that Thomas Edison was the inventor, as he is believed to have invented the turntable for his
phonograph (留声机). The turntable may have developed into the lazy Susan later.
Regardless of who invented it, it wasn"t until 1917 that the term"lazy Susan" was used in an advertisement
for the invention. In Britain, however, the term"dumbwaiter" is still used rather than"lazy Susan". The reason
for the naming of it is still a mystery. One theory is that it was named after either Jefferson"s or Edison"s
daughter, both of whom were named Susan.
1. What is a "lazy Susan"?
A. A waitress
B. A convenient tool
C. A table
D. A cabinet
2. According to those who believed Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan, ______.
A. his daughter was very lazy
B. the lazy Susan didn"t exist until the 18th century
C. Thomas Edison was his friend
D. Thomas Edison didn"t invent the phonograph
3. We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
A. the lazy Susan can work by itself
B. the lazy Susan was named after Thomas Edison"s daughter
C. how the lazy Susan got its name remains unknown
D. the lazy Susan was invented in Britain
4. The writer wrote the passage mainly to _______.
A. discuss how the lazy Susan was named
B. teach us how to make a lazy Susan
C. introduce Thomas Edison"s inventions
D. tell us what a lazy Susan is and its origin

When young children are learning to ride a bicycle, they require that their parents hold on to the back
of the bike so that they gain confidence and won"t fall off.
However, when children leave to go to college, or get married, parents must accept that their children
are riding off into their own future. At this time, parents shouldn"t stand back and with the children gone,
they are left with an empty nest. How can parents get through this period of life?
The first thing you should do is nothing at all. You should actually take some time to rest since your
child was born. Just relax and reward yourself for the work you put into your child.
Taking some time for yourself will allow you to adjust to the change and figure out how you really feel
about your child"s departure (离开). You shouldn"t compare how you feel with how other people feel, as
everyone"s experience of an empty nest is different.
Exercise is a great mood lifter. A physical fitness program may have been one of the first sacrifices (牺
牲) you made when your child came along; now, with fewer duties, you"ll have time to hit the gym regularly.
If you have a friend who also has become an empty nester recently, you may have found a new companion.
Not only will you get the chance to share dealing with tips, you"ll also create social opportunities for yourself,
which will get you out of that empty house if you need to. We all have those things that we say we"ll do or
learn"someday".
If you"re an empty nester, the "someday" might just be now. If you"re not sure exactly what to do in all
your spare time, take your time and think about it. It will, however, probably be easier to figure out your
dream when you"re out. Try exploring a nearby museum or attraction you"ve never visited.
Many parents may fear an empty nest because they worry that their little birds have flown away forever.
Try setting up a regular phone date with your child. A once-a-week call may make you feel satisfied while
giving your child a reasonable degree of freedom.

Every kid wishes to be an adult. But now as grown-ups, some adults find they cannot leave childhood
behind. They become "kidults" (kid+adult). Being a kidult has become a lifestyle-choice among young people
across Asia. Some kidults collect toys they once played with. Hello Kitty, Garfield, and Snoopy have many
adult fans around the world. It is not unusual to see a 20-something woman with a big, Garfield-shaped
cushion on her sofa or a Hello Kitty mobile phone accessory.
Other kidults still enjoy children"s stories and fairy tales. For example, Bloomsbury even published the
Harry Potter novels with an adult cover. That way, no one else on the subway will know that an adult is
actually reading a children"s book!
"Kidults can be like vitamins to society. Adults who value their childhood and hold on to pure, child-like
emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society," said Lee Sojung, professor of Foreign Studies at
Hankuk University (韩国外国语大学). He added that kidult culture may fill the generation gap between adults
and kids. It could give children and their parents books, movies, and cartoon shows to enjoy together. He
may be right.
Tim Greenhalgh, a professor, explained that some kidults just refuse to grow up. They value childhood
because life in a busy and stressful city frightens them. Kidults would like to forget their age and openly
show their fear of society and adulthood.
1. We can infer from the article that _____.
A. Kidults miss their childhood so much that they can"t give up their toys
C. Kidults like to have vitamins very much
B. Bloomsbury knows some kidults don"t want people to know that they are kidults
D. Some toys are so interesting that even adults like them very much
2. According to the author, being a kidult is good in some way except that _____.
A. it can improve the relationship between parents and their kids
B. it can help kidults feel relaxed
C. it is helpful to solve some social problems
D. it can make people loyal to one"s parents
3. According to the writer, _____.
A. being a kidult is nothing wrong
B. kidults have mental problems
C. our society is very dull
D. some people can never grow up

Just getting accepted to an American college or university does not guarantee that you will get a visa.
And getting a visa just lets you arrive in the United States. It does not guarantee that an immigration officer
will permit you to enter the country.
If you are requesting a visa for the first time, you will probably have to go to an American embassy or
consulate (领事馆). You will need to bring a government form sent to you by your American school that
shows you have been accepted.
You will also need banking and tax records that show you have enough money to pay for your education.
And be prepared to provide evidence that you will return to your home country after your studies end.
All of this is important in satisfying the requirements to get a visa. A consular official will also take your

information. This includes directions about how and where to pay the visa application charge. The cost is
two hundred dollars.
You should apply for the visa as soon as you have been accepted to a school in the United States. The
government needs time to perform a background investigation.
You cannot receive a visa more than one hundred twenty days before the start of your program. And if
you are coming as a student for the first time, you cannot enter the country more than thirty days before
classes begin.
Once you come to the United States, you can stay for the length of your period of study. Your school
is required to provide the Department of Homeland Security with reports on your status as a student.

2. When should you apply for a visa?
