阅读理解     Color is very important in our daily life. It can influence our choice of purchase when we go shopping
and can also affect the way we look and feel. A person can be naturally attracted to one particular color
while finding another color repulsive. The influence of color on human emotions and feelings is very
powerful and designers, advertisers, artists and even doctors use it in their professions for different
purposes.
Every day, without even thinking about it, we use color to communicate our feelings. For example, the
color we choose to wear is one way of expressing ourselves. It says something about the person, how he
or she feels, and how he or she wants others to feel about the wearer. In other words, color talks.
A person who wants to appear stylish and mature will usually wear dark colors or black. A person
who wishes to appear youngish, pure and innocent dresses in white, like the choice of a bride"s wedding
gown.   Also clothed in white are doctors, dentists, nurses and hospital in-patients as the color expresses
comfort, cleanliness and professionalism. Brown, blue or grey clothes are the usual colors worn by office
workers so as not to draw unnecessary attention to them. They are, in a way, conveying the message that
they want to be noticed for their work, not their appearance. People who wear bright, strong colors like
to be attractive and these colors are particularly popular with actresses, singers and party goers.
In the past, common people were not allowed to wear certain colors. In Thailand, for example, only
kings, queens and members of the royal family could wear purple while in ancient China, yellow was the
color reserved for the emperor and the empress. Nowadays, people can wear whatever color they like

阅读理解     Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd
public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic,
the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely.
They forget how much tourism can help the country"s economy. It is important to think about the people
of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country, keep the customs
and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to
work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country"s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose
money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first- class roads, and
other support facilities(配套设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class
tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of
the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to
get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money.
If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost. 1. Which of the following do you think has been discussed in the part before this selection?A. It is extremely important to develop tourism.
B. Building roads and hotels is essential.
C. Support facilities are highly necessary.
D. Planning is of great importance to tourism.2. Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ____________ .A. a bad effect on other industries
B. a change of tourists" customs
C. over-crowdedness of places of interest
D. pressure on traffic3. It can be inferred from the text that _____________ .A. the author doesn"t like tourism developing so fast
B. local people will benefit from tourist attraction
C. other parts of a country"s economy won"t benefit from tourism much
D. we can"t build too many support facilities4. The author thinks it is good for local people to know that tourism will ____________ .A. waste a lot of money
B. weaken their economy
C. help establish their customs
D. help improve their life

任务型读写。
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词.注意:每个空格只填一个单词。     How do you enter a room full of strangers? Do you walk right in full of confidence? Or do you try to
slip in without being noticed? The way you go into new situations shows your level of self-confidence.
In life, we admire those who do their tasks confidently. We prefer people who appear to know what
they"re doing. But where does that confidence begin?
Developing self-confidence starts very early. It"s parents" role to get kids on the right track (轨道)
toward becoming confident people. To help that process, parents should always offer more praise than
criticism (批评). That can be done by focusing on the child"s strengths. Parents should encourage their
children to try new things and take risks. When children make mistakes, their parents should still let them
know that they are loved. Children whose parents do these things will likely develop into confident adults.
But self-confidence still doesn"t come easily. So what"s the solution (解决办法)?
With most things in life, practice makes perfect, and that is true of confidence skills. The more you
practice them, the easier they will become.
Always hold your head high and look people in the eye. Answer questions clearly and confidently.
The way you walk shows others how confident you are.
Focus on the things that you do well, and look for opportunities to use those abilities.
Keep an item in clear view that reminds you of a recent success. It could be a good test score or a
prize from a contest. Remind yourself that one success often leads to the next.
Prepare thoroughly for every project. You"ll approach the task more confidently knowing that you"re
ready.
All humans fail at times, and you will too. But don"t allow mistakes to trouble you. Learning from
mistakes helps you face the same situation later without fear.
Even with practice, you will never be perfect. But you can learn to love and accept yourself and live
your life with confidence.                                             Title:  1. _____ Self-confidence

Ask Dr .JeffersThis month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the human brain and how it works.
Dear Dr. Jeffers,
One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists are learning to use computer to "read minds". Is there any truth to this story? -Jane Leon, New York, USA Dear Ms. Leon, Well, a lot of research is
being conducted in this area, but so far, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computer
programs haven"t been able to actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects(受试者)were
connected to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then asked to choose
between adding or subtracting(减)the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow
brain processes and make the correct assumptions(假设)70 percent of the time. It"s not quite mind reading, but it"s certainly a first step. -Dr. J.
Dear Dr. Jeffers,
My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into his sides and tickle (胳肢)him until he laughs
uncontrollably. The other day I noticed him trying to tickle himself but he couldn"t do it. Why not?
-Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada
Dear Mr. Lewis,
It"s because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to know what to pay attention to and what
to ignore. It causes us to ignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mild panic reaction
when there is an unexpected feeling. For example, you don"t notice how your shoulder feels while you"re
walking down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches you lightly on the shoulder,
you may jump in fear. It"s that unexpected part that causes the tickle reaction.
