Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject: Slimming down classics?
Mr.Handsome  2012212 6:34 AM Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cutdown classics (经典著作), is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L. Tolstoy, M. Mitchell and C. Bronte. Now, each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 pages percent of original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads "in half the time", will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions.

Well, I"m the publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention, Mr.Handsome. I must say, the idea developed from a game of "shame" in my office. Each of us was required to confess (承认) to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping (跳读) Jane Eyre.We realized that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones.    As a leading publishing house, we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it"s not as if we"re withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them.

I"m the director of the online book club www.lovereading.co.uk.
Mr.Edwards, I think your shortened edition is a_breath_of_fresh_air.I"m guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it"s just so long.I"d much rather read two 300page books than one 600page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics
Mr.Crockatt

I"m from the London independent bookshop Corckatt & Powell.
In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics? I"m afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don"t have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don"t read a shortened version and kid yourself it"s the real thing.

As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods."The woods" was our parttime address,
destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend"s house and found him not at home, his mother
might say, "Oh, he"s out in the woods," with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance. It"s similar to the tone
people sometimes use nowadays to tell me that someone I"m looking for is on the golf course or at the
gym, or even "away from his desk". For us tenyearolds, "being out in the woods" was just an excuse to
do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索).
Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today.History seemed to be mostly about
explorers. Our explorations, though, seemed to have less system than the historic kind: something usually
came up along the way.Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were.If you read a story in which
someone does that successfully, be skeptical;_the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold
weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five
trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches, easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end.By then some of us
has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month
when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We
climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were
rather big to be up in a tree.Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school
cafeteria.

1. The author and his friends were often out in the woods to ________.

A. spend their free time
B. play golf and other sports
C. avoid doing their schoolwork
D. keep away from their parents

2. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. The activities in the woods were well planned.
B. Human history is not the result of exploration.
C. Exploration should be a systematic activity.
D. The author explored in the woods aimlessly.

3. The underlined word "skeptical" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. calm
B. doubtful
C. serious
D. optimistic

4. The reason why we visited the four or five trees regularly is the following except that ________.

A. they were tall beeches
B. they were easy to climb
C. they were not high to climb
D. they were comfortable to sit in

5. How does the author feel about his childhood?

A. Happy but short.
B. Lonely but memorable.
C. Boring and meaningless.
D. Long and unforgettable.

Many animals recognize their food because they see it.So do humans. When you see an apple or a
piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat.You can also use other senses when you
choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike
some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice.Different animals use different
senses to find and choose their food.A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most
animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type.
The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo.Other animals eat only one type of food even
when given the choice.A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there
are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear
eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different
depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet.We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for
us.In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them
overweight, which is bad for their health.Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter,
can also be bad for the health.Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern
life.

1. We can infer from the text that humans and animals ________.

A. depend on one sense in choosing food
B. are not satisfied with their food
C. choose food in similar ways
D. eat entirely different food

2. Which of the following eats only one type of food?

A. The white butterfly.
B. The small bird.
C. The bear.
D. The fox.

3. Certain animals change their choice of food when ________.

A. the season changes
B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places
D. they are attracted by different smells

4. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.

A. food is chosen for a good reason
B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food
D. some people care little about healthy diet

5. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Animals often use senses to eat their food.
B. Most animals have a more varied diet.
C. All animals spend their lives eating one type of food.
D. The diet of birds and fox will be the same depending on the season.
