My sister and I grew up in a little village in England. Our father was a struggling   16 , but I always knew he was   17 . He never criticized us, but used   18  to bring out our best. He’d say, “If you pour water on flowers, they flourish. If you don’t give them water, they die.” I   19  as a child I said something   20  about somebody, and my father said, “   21  time you say something unpleasant about somebody else, it’s a reflection of you.” He explained that if I looked for the best   22  people, I would get the best   23 . From then on I’ve always tried to   24   the principle in my life and later in running my company.
Dad’s also always been very   25 . At 15, I started a magazine. It was   26  a great deal of my time, and the headmaster of my school gave me a   27 :stay in school or leave to work on my magazine.
I decided to leave, and Dad tried to sway me from my decision,   28  any good father would. When he realized I had made up my mind,  he said, “Richard, when I was 23, my dad   29   me to go into law. And I’ve   30  regretted it. I wanted to be a biologist,   31  I didn’t pursue my   32 . You know what you want. Go fulfill it.”
As   33  turned out, my little publication went on to become Student, a national   34  for young people in the U.K.  My wife and I have two children, and I’d like to think we are bringing them up in the same way Dad   35  me.

根据第三段my dad 49  me to go into law. And I’ve 50 regretted it. I wanted to be a biologist, 51 I didn’t pursue my  52.
He never criticized us, but used 38 to bring out our best.“他不是批评我们,而是用表扬显示出我们是最好的”可知他是“特别的”。
If you pour water on flowers,……及41 time you say something ……及……if I looked for the best 42 people, I would get the best 43. 应选A。
根据作者的父亲说as a child I said something…… C remember
根据you say something unpleasant about somebody else, it’s a reflection of you可知,说了某人不友好的事情,故选B 项unkind。
根据from then on I’ve always tried to ……由always可知无论何时(any time)故答案选C。
根据后文“我总是试图遵循这个原则”可知look for the best in people才能get the best“作为回报”。
根据下文作者leave to work on my magazine意识到作者下定决心了,并没有象他父亲那样阻止,而是让作者Go fulfill it。 故选A。
根据下文the headmaster gave me a choice: stay in school or leave to work on my magazine可知started the magazine占用大量时间。故选A taking up。Make up 构成,组成; pick up捡起,拿起;接收等;keep up维持,保持。
根据stay in school or leave to work on my magazine中的or 可知是做出选择。
51 I didn’t pursue my dream和前文的regretted it可知作者的祖父说服了作者的父亲学法律。
所以选A。
I wanted to be a biologist与后面的didn’t pursue可知是转折,故选B.
wanted to be a biologist只能称为dream,而不是promise(诺言)和belief(信仰)
As it turned out接Go fulfill it(dream),两者中的it 都指开办杂志的梦想。“正如我的梦想所实现的结果那样,我的出版物后来命名为student,一个国家级杂志”故选C。
小题19:考查名词。根据前文作者的dream是start a magazine可知本题应选B。
小题20:考查动词。raise等同于bring sb up“养育”。“我们正在用父亲养育我的方式来养育我们的孩子。故本题选D。
核心考点
试题【My sister and I grew up in a little village in England. Our father was a struggl】;主要考察你对题材分类等知识点的理解。
In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them.
At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.
Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.
Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.
Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

Opened in 1971, the Magic Kingdom was the first theme park at Walt Disney World. All Disney World theme parks are open 365 days a year, although opening and closing times for each park are different from day to day. If  you are traveling without kids, try to visit it on a school day to avoid the largest crowds. If you need to visit it during a school vacation, try at least to avoid the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July.
If you are not staying at a Disney World hotel, avoid visiting the Magic Kingdom on its Extra Magic Hours days. The hotel guests get into the park early on those days, increasing the waiting time for visitors who arrive at the normal opening time.
Buy your Walt Disney World tickets online at Disney World’s website. There will be some advice on picking the right ticket. See the guide to Disney World tickets. You will also need to call in advance to make lunch or dinner reservations (预订). Disney accepts reservations, through 1-407-WDW-DINE, up to 180 days in advance. Time does pass quickly, so you should call six months before your trip to get a lunch reservation in the castle. We suggest you should have your lunch at Cinderella’s Royal Table for your tour. If you can’t get the reservation, ask for the Liberty Tree Tavern instead.
Keep in mind that to reach the Magic Kingdom, you must park at Disney World’s Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) parking lot, take a tram (有轨电车), and then take a boat across the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Magic Kingdom.

Paparazzi, or "paps", are photographers who take pictures of famous people when they are not at the center of public attention. Paps are different from professional photographers or journalists because they never take ordinary photos.
The goal for paparazzi is to get pictures that no one else will get and then sell the pictures to the buyer who offers the most money —normally a small newspaper, magazine or website.
There is no law against paparazzi taking pictures in public places. However, there are laws that protect certain individuals. For example, child protection laws stop improper (不合适的) pictures of anyone under 16 from being published.
There is also no law that stops paparazzi from following celebrities (名人) and taking their pictures either. However, if paps are secretly following them and taking pictures of their faces, they could get into trouble.
Most paparazzi hang out on streets and hot spots for celebrities, waiting for the opportunity to take a picture of a star. Many stay on the streets until the early hours of the morning when celebrities are leaving nightclubs and looking a little worse for wear. However, some have other ways to make sure they get pictures. Many paps are in contact with "informers" who know the locations of celebrities at any given time. They then pass the information on to paparazzi. An informer could be anyone —from a restaurant waiter to a salesman.
Most of the time, paparazzi get a bad reputation for following celebrities. But sometimes stars or their managers will contact paps themselves and tell them exactly where and when they will go.
What a love-hate relationship between paparazzi and celebrities!

For many years, Hawaii has been a magic name to people who like to travel. People on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, in Japan and in America, dream of seeing these beautiful islands in the middle of the ocean. Their dreams always include at least one scene of a sunset over the ocean. In the tropical(热带的) lands, the sun drops, like a ball of golden fire, into the sea, and it droops so quickly that you can almost see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow that lights the skies and shines in the quiet water.
People often have a quiet, peaceful time ---perfect for a leisurely(悠闲的) walk along the water. This scene is not too different from the dramatic(令人神往的) beauty that greeted the first strangers to these islands centuries ago. They were Polynesian people who came from Tahiti in canoes not much bigger than small boats.
They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm trees, but there were no giant hotels like the ones we see nowadays. The first people came to Hawaii nearly two thousand years ago, but skyscraper hotels were only built in the last 25 years. Now jet planes make it possible to fly to for a weekend from Tokyo. Wherever the people come from, they really want to see the original beauty of Hawaii.
