special days: Mother"s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and
Father"s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set
aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their
children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give
love and care to their children. These two days offer an
opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and
fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers
must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways.
On Mother"s Day people wear camations.A red one symbolizes a
living mother. A white one shows that mother is dead. Many
people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is also a
day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓
地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in
restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues(烤肉)for Father"s
Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make
them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are
valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of
the gift that is important, but it is "the thought that counts".
Greeting card stores, florists(花商),candy makers, bakeries,
telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during
these holidays.

place in London, on the last weekend in August, every year since
1964.
This great festival began with the Black immigrants(黑人移

poor.

Sunday and Monday being the major camival days. There are
scores of massive" sound systems" , many beautiful and big floats
(游行彩车) and steel drum bands (钢鼓乐队). There are
hundreds of stalls (货摊) along the streets of the area selling all
sorts of food and drink including Caribbean specialties (特产).
Dressed in different colors, hundreds of children get the
parade under way on Sunday, ahead of more than 100 floats and
thousands of performers who will stage the main parade on
Monday. Party-goers will eat, drink and dance their way through

festival is a time when the family come together for a meal and give thanks to God for the blessings
they have received. The first Thanksgiving festival was celebrated by the early American settlers who
gave thanks to God for their good harvest.
In America Thanksgiving is a family holiday. It is on that holiday that all the family make a special
effort to get together. The feast (节日 ) is always on Thursday and most people have a four-day holiday
from school and work. Thus they are able to travel a great distance to be with their family.
The Thanksgiving meal is traditionally turkey, which was the food for the first Thanksgiving. The table
is filled with fruits, walnuts (胡桃) and many kinds of vegetables. For dessert (甜点) the main choice is
usually pumpkin pie. The meal is a time for the members of the family to talk to each other. There will be
talking before the meal, during the meal and long after the meal.
On Thanksgiving morning there are sporting events and parades (游行) in many cities to mark the
day. The family dinner is usually held in the afternoon around 4 o"clock. The mother will prepare the
meal and the father will carve (切) the turkey. He will preside (主持) at the head of the table. The meal
will begin with a short prayer of thanksgiving to God for the blessings the family received. The father will
also thank the family for coming together on this day. During the meal there is plenty of food for everyone
present. The meal is a very joyful time. When the meal is over, some will help with the dishes and others
will return to the living room to talk or watch television.
In many ways the festival of Thanksgiving is similar to the Chinese festival of Mid-Autumn Day. It is
a time for the family to get together for dinner.

after Saint Valentine, an early Christian (基督教的) churchman
who helped young lovers. Valentine was killed for his Christian
beliefs on February 14 more than 1 700 years ago, but the day that
has his name is even earlier than that.
More than 2 000 years ago, the ancient Romans celebrated a
holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their
names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container(容
器) . Boys reached into the container and pulled one out. The girl
whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweet
heart for a year.
Lovers still put their names on pieces of paper and they send
each other Valentine"s Day cards that tell of their.love. Sometimes
they also send gifts, like flowers or chocolate candy. Americans
usually send gifts and cards through the mail system. But some
use another way to send this message. They have it printed in a
newspaper. The cost is usually a few dollars. Some of the
messages are simple and short, "Jane, I love you very much. "
Others say more. This one, for example, "Dan, roses are red.
Violets are blue. I hope you love me as much as I love you.
Forever. Mary. "
Most of the newspapers that print such messages are local,
but USA Today is sold throughout the United States and 90 other
countries as well. This means someone can send a Valentine
message to a lover in a faraway city or town almost anywhere in the
world. These messages cost 80 dollars or more. An employee (雇
员) of USA Today says readers can have a small heart or rose
printed along with their messages this year. Will this kind of
Valentine"s Day message reach the one you love? Well, just make
sure he or she reads the newspaper.

traveler, you know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of
someone-or something-else. 1
In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B.C. trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and makeup
at harvest festivals. 2 To the dance was gradually added pantomime-the imitation of movements and
gestures-as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants, and finally the use of dialogue.
While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in
the western world, in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a highly specialized art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom. 3
Modern acting, by contrast, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal
talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are
known worldwide. 4 A special form of acting takes place in radio drama, which was highly popular
before television. In radio drama the actors face an unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience.
So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.
5 Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year.
Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged.
Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.
B. Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus.
C. It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.
D. Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.
E. Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to fame and riches.
F. Broadway and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talent.
G. Consequently, they had little opportunity to demonstrate their individual personalities.
