NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase(抹去) the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
“Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatryat Harvard Medical School. : “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.”
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity(特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure we want to wipe those memories out,” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist

Cities of Tomorrow
Middle school students combine science and imagination as they celebrate National Engineers
Week in a Future City Competition.
In the African city of Mwinda, floating farms are quite common. The city’s residents zip around in hydrogen-powered hover(盘旋的)vehicles, and renewable energy resources provide the city’s power. That’s how Jake Bowers,12,Emily Ponti,14,and Krisha Sherburne,12,imagined their future city.
The students, who attend St.Thomas More School in Baton Rouge,Louisiana, took first place
for their design last week in the 2007 National Engineer Week Future City Competition held in
Washington,D.C.The students won a trip to the U.S Space Camp in Huntsville,Alabam.
Kids from 35 middle schools across the country made it to Washington. They had teamed up
with teachers and volunteer engineer mentors(顾问,导师)to develop cities. Each team began by
creating a fictional city on SimCity 3000,a computer game that allows players to construct towns.
The students then built a tabletop model of the city, wrote an essay and presented their creation to a
panel(专门小组) of judges. This year’s theme asked students to design fuel cell powered
communities.Fuel cell technology works by using hydrogen and oxygen to produce power. The
process is environmentally friendly.
Organizers hope the competition provides a fun and educational way to spark young people’s
interest in engineering.“As the number of graduates in engineering(decreases),it’s ever more
important to encourage students to build these skills at an early age,”says John Hofmeister,
President of Shell Oill Company.Shell is a sponsor of the annual Future City contest.Judging by
this year’s competition, plenty of kids are getting the message. Some 30,000 students from more
than 1,000 schools participated in the 2006 -2007 Future City Competition.
64.What is not imagined in the three teenagers’ mind for their future city?

Experts believe that there are about 40,000 different types of jobs in the world. Choosing the right one is a difficult job in itself.
“Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job that they are not suited to. “Chance” may play a more important part than “decision”. So here are a few steps to help you think about jobs, which you might enjoy doing after school or university.
First, it is important to recognize what kind of person you are and which special qualities make you different from everyone else.
To examine your skills and abilities even further, ask yourself this question: in the following three areas — skills with people, skills with information or skills with things — which are your best skills?
You may have noticed something while you were doing this task. The point is that there is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like are and enjoy looking at pictures, it is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse and not a big dog, that looks like a horse and not a big dog, that looks like a horse and not a big dog, that is a skill. The best job is one that uses your skills n something that you are interested in. in addition to this, it is an advantage if you believe that a particular job is worth doing in the world.
After that, the next step is research. To find out as much as possible about different kinds of work, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers. Ask your friends about the work they do. If you are interested in banking, it is better to talk to a bank clerk who is twenty –four, rather than a bank manager who is sixty –four. Do not rely on your parents’ friends for information. A younger person will be able to describe a normal day at work and tell you about the interesting or boring things when you first start working.
Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing.
61. The difference between “finding a job” and “choosing a job” lies in _______.
A. finding a job is a decision while choosing a job is a chance
B. finding a job is more important than choosing a job.
C. A job that you find is one who is more suitable for you than one that you choose
D. A job that you choose is based on your decision and suits you while one that you find often isn’t.
62. What is the first step to find a job that suits you well?
A. The first step is to recognize what kind of person you are and which special qualities make you different from everyone else.
B. The first step is to find out as much as possible about different kinds of work.
C. The first step is to ask your friends about the work they do.
D. The first step is to consider your parents’ advice.
63. All the things are ways of research about different kinds of work except______.
A. Go to library and refer to books.
B. Turn to your friends to help.

请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项.
In the debates about how a particular piece of land is to be used, the priorities often conflict. What should you do, for example, if you find out that under the fertile fields of a farming community there is a thick bed of coal which can be strip mined(露天矿) ? Strip mining tears up top soil and plants. But mining may create jobs, bring money to the towns businesses. Those who approve of strip mining say that the coal is needed, and they point out that it is quicker and cheaper to get coal from the surface than to go deep into the earth to get it by standard mining techniques. On the other hand, it takes nature 500 years to create an inch of top soil. As the countryside fills up, people are becoming more aware of the need for open space. Nearly every proposal for a new power plant, highway, or airport draws fierce opposition. Everyone wants the big, land-eating “uglies” to be in someone else’s backyard. Minneapolis and St.Paul, Minnesota, for example, have been debating about the site of a future airport for years. Yet if a new airport is needed, it will have to go somewhere.
How do we find our way out of the land-used problem? One way might be to reexamine our values, to think in new directions. Does everyone have to have a car with its need for highways and parking lots? What about developing mass transport systems that use less land? Do suburbs have to spread? Can they be designed so they use less space? Do we have to have more energy? If we do, do we really have to strip-mine coal to provide it?
However difficult they may be to arrive at, choices will have to be made if we want to preserve the beauty and usefulness of the land. For there is at least one point on which all of us can agree: The land does have its limits.

Why do people work? Of course, you may have asked yourself the same question as why you have to work. “Self-interest” in its broadest sense, including the interests of family and friends, is a basic motivation(动力)for work in all societies. But self-interest includes more than providing for living or getting wealth that people usually think. For example, a sense of duty, a feeling of competing, and a pleasure in working are other reasons for working. Studies show that most of Americans would continue to work even if they have had enough money to live comfortably.
When people work, they gain a contributing place in society. The fact that what they receive pay for their work means that what they do is needed by other people and what they are doing is necessary to society. Work can also place people in the larger class of society and provide all kinds of identities (身份) for them. In the United States, it is a cruel public fact that to do nothing is to be nothing and to do little is to be little. Work is commonly seen as the measure of an individual (个人).
Some scientists have shown some of the ways that work has effect on our lives. Generally, people who always do their favorite work are more open to new ideas and easier to get along with others, and as parents they pass these characteristics on to their children. Our work then is an important social thing that makes us know who and what we are.
