the chemicals in its blood stream. If the danger continues, it will defend itself, or it will run away as fast
as possible. Something like this also happens to people.
When we are excited, angry, scared or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical
changes, all of which make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them
take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger-or hit somebody-and regretted it
later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then
wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn"t always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it"s smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep the feelings of anger,
sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop,
and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actual1y be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don"t just go away. It"s as if you bought some bananas and stuck
them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you"d smell them. And if you opened
the cupboard, chances are that you"d see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They"d be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can
pretend they don"t exist, but they"ll still be around. And at last you"ll have to deal with them, just like those
bananas.
B. people can"t control their feelings
C. people"s physical reactions are like those of animals in a way
D. our bodies go through many physical changes in certain situations
B. we sometimes can"t control our feelings
C. we always do something wrong to other people
D. we don"t pay attention to our physical changes
B. we should treat emotions like bananas in a cupboard
C. feelings will gradually disappear when we hold them in
D. it"s good for our health to keep pleasant feelings

you help yourself learn a new language, such as English? There are several ways to make learning English a
little easier and more interesting.
The first step is to feel positive about learning English. If you believe that you can learn, you will learn. Be
patient. You do not have to understand everything all at once. It is natural to make mistakes when you learn
something new. We can learn from our mistakes. In other words, do not worry about taking risks.
The second step is to practice your English. For example, write a journal, or diary, every day. You will get
used to writing in English, and you will feel comfortable expressing your ideas in English. After several weeks,
you will see that your writing is improving. In addition, you must speak English every day. You can practice
with your classmates outside class. You will all make mistakes, but gradually you will become comfortable
communicating in English.
The third step is to keep a record of your language learning. You can write this in your journal. After each
class, think about what you did. Did you answer a question correctly? Did you understand something the
teacher explained? Perhaps the lesson was difficult, but you tried to understand it. Write these accomplishments
(成就) in your journal.
You must be positive about learning English and believe that you can do it. It is important to practice every
day and make a record of your achievements. You will enjoy learning English, and you will feel more
confidence in yourself.
B. you can understand everything all at once
C. if you make mistakes, you can learn from your mistakes
D. if you believe you can learn, you will learn

C. express your ideas in English
D. understand everything all at once
B. To worry about taking risks.
C. To think about what has been done after each class.
D. To make a record of the achievements.
B. Some people learn a second language easily. Other people do not.
C. There are ways to help you learn a second language more easily.
D. Don"t worry about taking risks when learning a second language.
point the hour-hand in the direction (方向) of the sun. Imagine a line which runs from the center of the watch
through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. This line will surely point south.
If you know astronomy a little, you will understand why this works. In the northern half of the earth, the
sun is in the south at noon. In Russia, the real noon is one o"clock. If at that time we point the hour-hand at
the sun, the hour-hand and number one will point south. That is why you must imagine a line which will run
from the center of the watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. It will point
south. If you are in the southern part of our planet, you must point number 12 at the sun. The line which you
can imagine between number twelve and the hour-hand will then show south.
B. the minute-hand
C. the hour-hand
D. number one
B. to show direction
C. to enjoy ourselves
D. to keep good time
B.

B. An Interesting Watch
C. The Story of a Watch
D. The Sun and a Watch
Research by a British biology student suggests that sharks could be used to predict storms.
Lauren Smith, 24, is close to completing her study on shark"s ability to sense pressure. If her studies
prove the theory, scientists may be able to monitor the behavior of sharks to predict bad weather.
Miss Smith had previously studied the behavior of lemon sharks in the Bahamas. She then used their
close relatives, lesser spotted dogfish, for further research at Aberdeen University.
Her work-thought to be the first of its kind to test the pressure theory-resulted from the observation
that juvenile black tip sharks off Florida moved into deeper water ahead of a violent storm in 2001.
Miss Smith said, "I"ve always been crazy about traveling and diving and this led me to an interest in
sharks." "I was delighted to have been able to research in the area for my degree. I know there"s so much
more we need to understand-but it certainly opens the way to more research."
It has been discovered that a shark senses pressure using hair cells in its balance system. At the Bimini
Shark Lab in the Bahamas, Miss Smith fixed hi-tech sensors to sharks to record pressure and temperature,
while also tracking them using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology.
In Aberdeen, she was able to study the effects of tidal (潮汐的) and temperature changes on dogfish-
none of which were harmed. She also used a special lab which can mimic(模拟) oceanic pressure changes
caused by weather fronts.
She is due to complete her study and graduate later this year. She says she will be looking for a job which
will give her the chance to enrich her experience of shark research.
B. a popular science magazine
C. a research paper
D. a personal diary
B. Sharks" behavior can be controlled.
C. Michael Fish is not qualified for his job.
D. Lauren Smith will become a weather forecaster.
B. measuring the air pressure of weather fronts
C. recording sharks" body temperature
D. monitoring sharks" reaction to weather changes
B. A new research effort in predicting storms.
C. Biologists" interest in the secrets of sharks.
D. Lauren Smith"s devotion to scientific research.
testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in
the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive.
Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it"s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday
communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even
when it is little more than hearsay and rumor (谣言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn"t show
it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers
it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message
word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original
message has changed.
That"s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes
the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a
story, trying to improve on it, stamping (打上标记) it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it
think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-
stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless
it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the
interpretation he placed upon those facts.
B. solving a math problem
C. visiting an exhibition
D. doing scientific reasoning
B. knowledge
C. communication
D. passive learning
B. a message should be delivered in different ways
C. people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D. people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
B. Passive learning may not be reliable.
C. Active learning occurs more frequently.
D. Passive learning is not found among scholars.
know how their hearts beat. They want to know why the ocean water tastes salty.
As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they
are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. They become interested in the
physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that
people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this
curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science.
Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences
study the earth, the oceans, and the sky. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological
sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e.g. physics, chemistry.
These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart
beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-
five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries
oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries
to them. The muscles need oxygen, too. So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the
muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles.
It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.
Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, "Why does the ocean water taste
salty" scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks.
Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt
into the ocean. But then we ask, "What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every
year." Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.
We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.
B. People in different countries are interested in different things.
C. Men and women are curious about different things.
D. People of different ages are interested in different things
B. man-made things
C. plants and animals
D. ocean water
B. more signals
C. more salt
D. water
B. they know nothing about the world
C. they know little about the world
D. they want to be scientists
