阅读理解。     Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the
purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all-one
can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for
all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse
to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such
countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer
is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food.
If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our
towns.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in
such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that
we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one"s work. Only
such a type of education can be considered valuable to society. 1. The writer of the passage thinks that _____.A. education can settle most of the world"s problems
B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C. free education won"t help to solve problems
D. all the social problems can"t be solved by education 2. The writer wants to prove that _____. A. our society needs all kinds of jobs
B. our society needs free education for all
C. a farmer is more important than a professor
D. work with hands is the most important 3. The purpose of education is _____. A. to choose officials for the country
B. to prepare children mainly for their future work
C. to let everyone receive education fit for him
D. to build a perfect world 4. The passage tells us about _______ of the education. A. the means
B. the system
C. the value
D. the type

probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they
sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay
out of their territory.
Do you know what a "territory" is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称)
as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species (物种) are
welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a
stranger should enter your territory and threaten you,you might shout. Probably this would be enough to
frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing.
But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the
time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird"s song, and it is usually
enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the
territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language all their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting
up territories. 1. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds" singing is actually _____. A. an expression of happiness
B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger
D. a way of greeting  2. What is a bird"s "territory"? A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.
B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
C. An area for which birds fight against each other.
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own. 3. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season? A. Because they want to invite more friends.
B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
C. Because they want to find outsiders around.
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears. 4. How does the writer explain birds" singing? A. By comparing birds with human beings.
B. By reporting experiment results.
C. By describing birds" daily life.
D. By telling a bird"s story.

America and in China. I can"t tell any difference. But when I hear someone from America speak English
and hear someone speak Chinese, I can tell you there are a lot of differences.
I believe a common problem with Chinese students" learning English is that they were not taught to think
in English

in Chinese of the proper reply and translate it into English. After a long period of speaking the language, one

very beginning of your study. Many students ask me: What can I do to improve my spoken English?
My reply is: The more English you speak, the better English you will speak. There are many things you
can do to improve your spoken English. Of course, the best way is to live where English is spoken as a

help checking if there were messages or missed phone calls. I even played games on the phone sometimes."

implementing the ban. Those students who live far from school are allowed to bring mobile phones to
