unpublished research that children are most likely to be guided by their father"s eating and exercise habits.
The new study "Healthy Dads,Healthy Kids",led by Associate Professor Philip Morgan from the
designed to help fathers promote and demonstrate to their children positive behaviours related to physical
activity and healthy eating.
"The earlier findings showed that children are more likely to follow the example set by their father than
their mother when it comes to eating and exercise," said Morgan.
Morgan saw striking results in a previous trial involving 165 overweight children. He found children who
lost the most weight had fathers who were engaged in the new eating and exercise plan.
"We might think mothers are the main influence on children"s diet and health, but the reality may be
different," said Morgan. "The roles of fathers are changing.More families have two parents working and
more fathers are involved with food preparation and food shopping than in the past."
"Fathers influence the food and physical activity habits in the home through their behaviours, attitudes
and approach to food and eating, and act as a role model to their children," said Morgan.
Researchers are inviting fathers who would like to reduce their weight to join the "Healthy Dads,Healthy
Kids" program.Participation involves attending eight sessions (讲习班) at the University of Newcastle
over six months where the men will receive information, have weightrelated measurements recorded and
complete questionnaires.
Cooking healthy food with the kids and creating a backyard fitness circuit (循环训练场) are among
the assignments (课外作业) for fathers taking part in the study.
B.It involves fathers who want to lose weight.
C.It will last more than eight months.
D.It offers free online courses for parents.
B.regular sports training
C.balanced diets
D.their father"s influence
B.develop healthy eating habits by themselves
C.grow taller if their parents often do exercise
D.help their parents to form exercise habits
B.That more kids need their father"s help in learning.
C.That there are more working mothers than before.
D.That fathers become much busier than before.
Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months
old.Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes.A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder
on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his
mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way.If the baby moved his mouth the other
way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.
Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted
to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their
children"s activites and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language
development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of
depression.
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not
suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and
understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The
researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their
children.Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences the intelligence
development in babies?
A. The environment.
B. Mother"s sensitivity
C. Their peers (同龄人).
D. Education before birth.
2. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?
A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.
B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.
C. To show mothers can strongly influence the intelligence developent in their babies.
D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies" language skills.
3. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.
B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression.
C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.
D. Children with high communication abilities.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.
B. Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies"intelligence.
C. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are born or six months old.
D. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.
Keeping a full social calendar may help protect you from dementia (痴呆), researchers said on
Monday.Socially active people who were not easily stressed had a 50 percent lower risk of developing
dementia compared with men and women who were isolated and prone to distress, they reported in the
journal Neurology.
"In the past, studies have shown that chronic distress (长期抑郁) can affect parts of the brain,
possibly leading to dementia, " HuiXin Wang of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, who led the study,
said in a statement."But our findings suggest that having a calm and outgoing personality in combination
with a socially active lifestyle may decrease the risk of developing dementia even further."
An estimated 24 million people worldwide have memory loss, problems with direction and other
symptoms that signal Alzheimer"s disease and other forms of dementia.Researchers believe the number of
people with dementia may quadruple (变为四倍) by 2050, underlining the importance of better
understanding the condition.
The Swedish study involved 506 elderly people who did not have dementia when first examined. The
volunteers were given questionnaires about their personality traits and lifestyles and then tracked for six
years.Over that time,144 people developed dementia with more socially active and less stressed men and women 50 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the condition.
"The good news is, lifestyle factors can be modified as opposed to genetic factors which cannot be
controlled, " Wang said."But these are early results, so how exactly mental attitude influences risk for
dementia is not clear."
1. Study suggests that________.
A. women have a 50 percent lower risk of developing dementia than men
B. 50 percent of elderly people have the risk of developing dementia
C. people with active lifestyles will never develop dementia
D. going to a party will cut the risk of developing dementia
2. ________people are believed to develop dementia in one year on average in the future 40 years.
A. About 1.8 million
B. About 24 million
C. About 72 million
D. About 96 million
3. It can be inferred that________could be a good way to decrease the risk of developing dementia.
A. living alone in a deserted island
B. modifying genetic factors
C. changing lifestyles
D. getting away from activities
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It is not clear whether mental attitude influences the risk of developing dementia.
B. The people involved in the Swedish study are never diagnosed with dementia.
C. Memory loss, direction confusion could be the symptoms of dementia.
D. The number of people with calm and outgoing personality is growing.
climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with controlled light,
temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York highrise or a complex in the
Saudi desert.
The world already is having trouble feeding itself.Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of
those-about 3 billion-are hungry or illfed.Food prices,currently increasing,are buffeted by dryness,floods
and the cost of energy required to plant, harvest and transport it. And prices will only get more unstable.
Climate change makes longterm crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world already are
using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded:by midcentury, the global
population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion.
To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at the expense of forests and wilderness,or
finding ways to completely increase crop output.
Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house
plants in enclosed (封闭的)and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans
when needed, and the temperature is kept constant.Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but
according to the rhythm of the plant.
A building of 100 square meters and 14 layers(层)of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of
fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people.Their idea isn"t to
grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes.
Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful.Plants need only specific wavelengths of light
to grow.Their growth rate is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90
percent less water than outdoors agriculture. And city farming means producing food near the consumer,
and there"s no need to transport it long distances.
B.The city people live a hard life.
C.The world has difficulty feeding its people.
D.The world"s population is increasing fast.
B.prevented
C.demanded
D.well achieved
B.Sunshine is in great need for plants.
C.Day and night depends on plants.
D.Air quality is controlled by plants.
B.is highly adaptable
C.resembles greenhouse agriculture
D.suits the production of corn

there is a growing field of health care known as music therapy, which uses music to treat diseases. Even
hospitals are beginning to use music therapy. This is not surprising, as music affects the body and mind in
many powerful ways.
Research has shown that quick music can make a person feel more alert, while slow music can
produce a calm, deep thinking state. Also, research has found that music can change brainwave activity
levels. This can help the brain to change speeds more easily on its own as needed, which means that
music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you"ve stopped listening.
Breathing and heart rates can also be influenced by music. This can mean slower breathing, slower
heart rate. This is why music and music therapy can help reduce the damaging effects of long-term stress,
greatly promoting (促进) not only relaxation, but health.
Music can also be used to bring about a more positive state of mind by helping to keep worries away. Music has also been found to bring many other benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing
