Random ramblings from a guy who is too busy to have a Web site. On the bright side, you won"t find any ads, pop-ups, hype, or any attempts to sell you anything at all. Furthermore, you won"t find any pages divided into a hundred little boxes. And the text is so large, you don"t need an electron microscope to read it. A refreshing break from reality.  Anyway, here"s what I have so far as I gradually resurrect my poor neglected Web site.
PC Survival Camp
Being new to computers, or even just being a “casual user”, isn’t always fun. It"s as though everybody on the planet assumes you already know all the buzzwords, and already possess all the skills necessary to use a computer.  Which is a really big assumption, when you consider that nobody was ever born knowing how to use a computer. The links below provide some quick mini-tutorials on all the skills and buzzwords that everyone else seems to assume you already know. Click on any link (underlined text) for a quick mini-lesson. 举一反三
We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said: "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last."
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: "Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck."
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: "Here is a chance to show Holly what you really love. She’ll never forget it."
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬运车). In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was unhurt physically, but when I reached her, she was crying and saying: "Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck." I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened (湿润) and she said: "That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me."
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of that night.
I remember how sad Holly was and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly thinks back on her life, I want her to know what really matters in my life.

小题2:Why didn’t the writer punish Holly?
A.He was so rich that he didn’t care about losing one truck.
B.He thought there was no point punishing her after the accident.
C.He believed the truck was made of metal and of poor quality.
D.He wanted Holly to know he loved her more than any possessions.
小题3:What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.She still suffered physical pain.
B.She felt guilty of damaging the car.

D.She was not forgiven by her Dad.

Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion—like stress, anger, or frustration. What was going through your mind as you were going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered with (充斥) different kinds of thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to think?
The next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Yes, that’s right, stop. Whatever you’re doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you’re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.
Allow that emotion to consume you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. Don’t cheat yourself here. Take the entire minute—but only one minute—to do nothing else but feel that emotion.
When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I willing to keep holding on to this negative emotion as I go through the rest of the day?”
Once you’ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really feel it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion clears rather quickly.
If you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is OK. Allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion.
When you feel you’ve had enough of the emotion, ask yourself if you’re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of the day. If not, take a deep breath. As you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath.
This exercise seems simple—almost too simple. But, it is very effective. By allowing that negative emotion the space to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion rather than stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. You are actually taking away the power of the emotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. When you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion, it loses its control. You can clear your head and proceed with your task.
小题1:What should you do when you are into negativity according to the article?
A.Listen to some music.
B.Ignore it and do something else.
C.Just do nothing and truly feel that emotion.
D.Think about it and try to deal with it immediately.
小题2:The underlined word “immerse” (Paragraph 2) most probably means _____.
A.break downB.get rid ofC.cut offD.throw into
小题3:What’s the best title of this text?
A.Clear Your Mental Space.
B.Deep Breath, Trouble Away.
C.Try to Avoid the Negative Emotion.
D.Keep Holding on to This Negative Emotion as Long as Possible.
小题4:The author’s opinion towards negative emotion is _____.
A.doubtfulB.optimisticC.frightenedD.confused

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner.Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it.From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things.Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is.The laws of physics or the proper way to break an egg —the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something — and therefore to command respect.Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
小题1:Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?
A.Both can continue for generations.
B.Neither can be put to an end.
C.Neither has any clear winner.
D.Both are about where to draw the line.
小题2:What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The teens cause their parents to mislead them.
B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict
C.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
D.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents
小题3:Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ________.
A.give orders to the otherB.gain respect from the other
C.know more than the otherD.get the other to behave properly
小题4:What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Solutions for the parent –teen problems.
B.Examples of the parent –teen war.
C.Causes for the parent –teen conflicts.
D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to promise time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.
The shoes- named Square Eyes- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter (发射器) passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves(应得), based on the day"s efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. "We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out," she says. "And I wanted to tackle that with my design."
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically (自动地) switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps. Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals exactly one minute of TV time.
Existing pedometers(计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. "It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort," she says. "That was one of my main design considerations."
小题1:According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _____.
A.keep a record of the steps of the wearer.
B.deal with overweight among teenagers.
C.enable children to resist (抵制) the attraction of TV.
D.prevent children from being tricked by TV programs.
小题2:Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?
A.They control a child"s evening TV viewing time.
B.They determine a child"s daily pocket money.
C.They have raised the hot issue of overweight.
D.They contain information of the receiver.
小题3:Compared with other similar products, the new design ___.
A.sends teenagers" health data(数据) to the receiver.
B.counts the wearer"s steps through shaking.
C.records the sudden movement of the wearer.
D.make it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat
小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight
B.Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise
C.Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise
D.Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time
