阅读理解。     Last year my wife and I spent a most interesting month in Turkey. Before we left, we were reminded of
the difficulties of driving in Turkey. We certainly did not find this to be the case and, except for a few places
in faraway mountain areas, the roads were wide, and well-paved (铺设). We drove for 12 days along the
Western Coast of Turkey and had no problems at all. We found the Turkish drivers to be very polite and well
educated. We also found that eating lunch in the smaller towns was difficult, so we picnicked almost every
day.
The following day after our arrival was Turkey"s Children"s Day, started by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Ataturk loved children and he often said:"Children are a new beginning of tomorrow." He even dedicated (奉
献) the day 23rd of April to the children which today is celebrated as Children"s Day as well as the date when
the Republic of Turkey was founded.
On that day certain children are picked to take over the places of the government, and a lucky kid will be
the president of Turkey for a whole day. He can decide what"s going to happen and whether or not he is going
to have the president next to him. There are a very large number of possibilities of things he can do but some
shops aren"t open because they are celebrating the day as well.
All in all, it was a more enjoyable trip. I would recommend (推荐) a trip to Turkey to anyone with an
adventurous (冒险的) spirit! 1. Before the author and his wife went on a trip to Turkey, they were told that _____. [     ]
A. it was difficult to travel in Turkey
B. it was not easy to drive in Turkey
C. the streets in Turkey were dangerous

B. The couple drove for 12 days during their journey.
C. The Turkish drivers had good manners.
D. It was difficult to eat meals in Turkey. 3. The underlined word "He" in Paragraph 3 refers to _____. [     ]
A. every one of us
B. the government
C. the president of Turkey
D. the lucky child 4. What can be inferred from the passage?[     ]
A. The couple had no difficulty making their way in Turkey.
B. Turkey"s National Day falls on the 22nd of April.
C. The author joined in celebrating Children"s Day.
D. On Turkey"s Children"s Day everyone had holidays. 5. What does the author think of the trip to Turkey?[     ]
A. Interesting and dangerous.

When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words. He used to come
downstairs to breakfast.
The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the"Deaths"first; and then he knocked once on the
table. One of my sisters brought his toast (烤面包片), already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but
once I heard him say, "I love you very much, Edith. I would love you more if you buttered my toast on both
sides." He read the paper all through breakfast.
Two knocks on the table meant "I am ready for my tea". If a single knock followed, that meant "More toast,
please." After breakfast he said, "Boots." The paper was spread (展开) for him over the back of an armchair.
Yesterday"s paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He
read standing, at the same time putting on his boots and tying the laces (鞋带). With one boot finished, he
said, "Bus."
At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop the bus
when it came. It came early sometimes, and it had to wait for my father. "Overcoat, hat." One of my sisters
had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him and guided his arms into it. Then she pulled
his jacket down under the coat. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. "Handkerchief, pipe." They
were brought and put, with his tobacco, into his pockets. He looked out of the window and said either
"Walking stick" or "Umbrella". It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper.
He did not put it down until he heard the shout "Bus coming!" Then he kissed my mother and went out.
The girls breathed freely.
