The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs" story about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it were your last,
someday you"ll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
Remembering that I"ll be dead soon is the most important tool I"ve ever encountered (遇到) to help me make the big choice in life.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me
to go home and get my affairs in order, which is my doctors" code for preparing yourself to die.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening, I had another biopsy(活组织检查) and my wife told me that tumor turned to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I"m fine now.
This was the closest I"ve been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is
the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new.
Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be
cleared away.
Your time is so limited that you shouldn"t waste it repeating someone else"s life. Don"t be trapped by
dogma (教条)----which is living with the results of other people"s thinking. Don"t let the noise of others"
opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
1. The doctor advised the author to go home and get his affairs in order because _____.
A. he had to rest at home
B. his disease was not serious at all
C. his disease couldn"t be cured
D. he had to wait for the result of the test
2. How did the author feel after the diagnosis?
A. Angry
B. Excited
C. Optimistic
D. Hopeless
3. What does the author think of death?
A. He thinks it is nothing to be scared of.
B. He thinks it is not the end of life.
C. He thinks it is impossible to avoid.
D. He thinks it is the beginning of a new life.

4. In the author"s opinion, we should _____.

A. follow others" advice
B. take no notice of diseases
C. take exercise and keep healthy
D have the courage to follow our  heart
任务型读写。阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格中填入恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填入一个单词。
About six years ago, I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young
boy sat down at the next table. I couldn"t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the
woman asked, " So, how have you been?" And the boy---who could not have been more than seven or
eight years old replied, "Frankly, I"ve been feeling a little depressed lately."
This incident (小事) stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are
changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I hardly found out we were " depressed" until we were in high school.
The evidence of  changes in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don"t seem
childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults
than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no
longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on natural biological states, but also on patterns of access to
social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the
new situation. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in gradual stages:
traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the past 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (提示) machine has been installed in 98 percent of
American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加区分地), to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation (诱惑), many
children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social
information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that
must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex
materials.

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the
school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You"re nervous and that"s okay. Everyone
is afraid of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends.
On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that
I couldn"t figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn"t think I could rise to this
challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock
someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.
Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out.  With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so
bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.
Since then, I"ve been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn"t much of a victory since only three
people ran for the four positions.
It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something
that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some outofclass activities because you"ll find
it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn"t straight A"s.
Most important of all, be who you are, whether you"re a "fool", an athlete, or a lower grader. Don"t try
to pretend to be someone you"re not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.

1. The main reason for the author"s fear on his first day is that ________.
A. he was unable to work out the puzzle
B. his schoolmates were unfriendly to him
C. he was not familiar with the new surroundings
D. his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry

2. From the author"s first day experience we can infer that ________.
A. his home was far from the school
B. he got to school after classes began
C. he didn"t get any school schedule
D. he didn"t know the right way to class

3. After his first week at school, the author ________.
A. was still not accustomed to the schedule
B. gradually adjusted himself to the new school
C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined
D. ran for monitor of his class against three other students

4. According to the passage, the secret of the author"s success lies mainly in ________.
A. making more friends
B. getting more A"s at school
C. being who he really is
D. joining in outofclass activities

A father"s job is unique. If parents had job descriptions, mine would read: organize bills, play dates,
laundry, meals, carpool, snacks and outings. The only thing on my husband"s description would be the
word "fun" written in big red letters along the top.
Our parenting styles complement each other. His style is a nonstop adventure where no one has to
worry about washing their hands, or eating vegetables. I"m too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every
time I try, I am constantly outdone by my husband.
I bought my children bubble gumflavored toothpaste, and I taught them how to brush their teeth.  They
thought it was neat until my husband taught them how to rinse(濑口)by spitting out water between their
two front teeth like a fountain.
I tried singing fun songs as I washed behind my children"s ears during bath time. They enthusiastically
sang and clapped until their father came in and taught them how to catapult (弹射) the soap into the sink
with the washcloth.
I took the children for a nature walk to corral (把……赶入……) a slow ladybug(瓢虫)into my son"s
insect cage. I was "cool" until their father came home, spent two minutes in the backyard, and captured a
beetle the size of a Chihuahua (吉娃娃,一种产于墨西哥的狗)..
I try to tell myself I am a good parent even if my husband does things I can"t do. I can make sure my
children are safe. But I can"t wire the VCR so my children can"t watch their favourite video.
I can carry my children in my arms when they are tired and kiss them good night. But I can"t flip them
upside down so they can walk on the ceiling or prop them on my shoulders so they can see the moths
flying inside the light fixture.
I can take them to doctor appointments, but I"ll never go into the wilderness to fish. I"ll even sit in the
first row of every Little League game, but I"ll never teach my children how to hit a home run or slide into
first base.
I can do a lot of things for my children, but no matter how hard I try, I can never be their father.
