I felt tense and . It was the first time, after all. I drew the violin from under the jacket like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains rattling overhead, that I was about to myself. One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the before me, the violin under my chin.
The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a declaration of protest, then they settled down and began to run more _ and to stay more or less in tune. To my ,I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any at all. Then an old man, without stopping at all, dropped a penny into my as though getting rid of some guilty evidence.
I worked the streets of Southampton for several days, gradually obtaining the truth of the by trial and error. It was not a good thing, for instance, to let the hat fill up with money---the sight could a kind-hearted man; nor was it wise to it completely, which could also confuse him, giving him no hint as to where to his money. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became a practice and I made sure, between tunes, to take off most of the earnings, but always leaving two behind.
Old were most generous, and so were women with children, shop girls and barmaids. As for men, heavy drinkers were always willing listeners and so were big guys with muscles. But a man with an expensive hat, briefcase or dog: respectable types were the least of all. Except for retired army officers, who would shout "Why aren"t you , young man?" and then would over-tip to cover up their confusion.

To those who regularly watch presidential press conferences, Helen Thomas is a familiar figure.Usually dressed in red and always seated in the front row, she is always the first or second reporter the president calls upon.It is an honor she has earned.Besides, it affords her the perfect opportunity to do what she does best - challenge the president and other public officials to tell the plain truth. She said, "We reporters" priority(首要事情) is the people"s right to know - without fear or favor. We are the people"s servants."
Helen Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1920.All the nine Thomas children were brought up to value education, and all were expected to make something of themselves through working hard. She made up her mind while still in high school to become a reporter after writing for the student newspaper. After receiving her bachelor"s degree in 1942, Thomas headed straight for Washington, D.C.in search of a newspaper job. Before long, she landed one at Washington Daily News. Her duty included fetching coffee and doughnuts for the paper"s reporters and editors. The eager young woman found the atmosphere exciting and was convinced she had made the right career choice.
Her big break came when she was sent to Florida to report on the vacation of President-elect John F.Kennedy and his family.Once President Kennedy took office, Thomas changed her focus from the president"s family to his policies. She began attending the daily press briefings at the White House as well as presidential press conferences.Thomas has covered every president since Kennedy.Over the years, Thomas found her job "thrilling and inspiring," but never boring. And she took very seriously her duty to "keep an eye on the president" and keep American people informed.

It is almost that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his : "First of all I checked up my conditions and found myself not in mortal (致命的)danger. As there was no way to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from . In this way I dozed (打盹)off ."
His story put an end to my regret for the of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men to explore a mountain cave and got lost. to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of .Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to themselves, they would probably sense a faint light glimmering (闪烁)not far away .
Don’t you think that you can compare it with itself? When you meet with obstacles (障碍)in life and work, you are lost in darkness. you it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle . It seems to be a negative attitude, a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great in the first place.

The McGaritys have money, but they are show-offs with it. The McGarity girl just yesterday stood out there in the street eating from a bag of cookies while a ring of hungry children watched her. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts, and when she couldn"t eat any more, she threw the rest down the sewer(阴沟).
Miss Jackson who teaches at the Settlement House isn"t rich, but she knows things. She understands people. Her eyes look straight into yours when she talks with you. Mark Johnson, the eldest son,was sailing the yacht when he heard an immense bang and a thud(重击声).He thought the yacht had hit a rock. However, when he looked up, he saw the whale down the deck of the boat. He told the reporters, “ We were staring into its right eye. It was a very _ moment. The eye was about the of a dinner plate. It was huge.”
for the Johnson family, no one was hurt, but the yacht suffered damage. The whale had ruined the mast and rigging — the pole and ropes which hold the ——and so the family was left at sea, 10 miles from the shore. The equipment was also damaged, but fortunately they had a cell phone and were able to call for help.
Why the whale jumped onto the yacht is a ,but the family thinks that maybe the boat had not sailed between the whale and its baby calf. Perhaps the whale was trying to its calf when it jumped, hit the yacht by chance.
Whatever the reason, people are completely that this incident happened. There is over 135 million square miles of ocean , so what are the of a whale jumping onto a 30-foot-long yacht? The chance of something like this happening is miniscale, but it just shows that life is full of surprises.
