China bans free plastic bags
CHINA began a crackdown on plastic bags, banning production of thin bags and forbidding supermarkets and shops from handing them out free, Tuesday, June 1, 2008.
Chinese people use up to 3 billion plastic bags a day and the country has to refine 5 million tons of oil every year to make plastics used for packaging, according to a report on the Website of China Trade News, and fails to get rid of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, the State Council said in a notice posted on the Central Government’s Website.
“Our country consumes huge amounts of plastic bags every year. While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, waste of energy and resources, because of too much use and inadequate recycling,” it said.
Worries about pollution are growing among ordinary citizens, as years of breakneck growth has a very bad effect on the country’s air and water, but the new ban may not be universally welcomed.

Is the customer always right?    小题1:   Shopping is very much a part of a country’s culture, and attitudes to shopping and consumers vary from country to country just as much as climate or taste in food.
Recent economic hardship has given the consumers increased power in Europe because shopkeepers fight to win their share of reduced disposable(可支配的)income. This has meant falling prices, plenty of special offers and a re-examination of what customer service really means.
小题2:  In restaurants in the south of the USA, for example, waiters compliment(恭维)you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on your wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction.
Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in a restaurant may possible dream of such customer service.     小题3:  In fact, different nationalities expect different types of service. As a friend of mine once told me “By the end of evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife.”
A Chinese-American friend loves telling people about how her Chinese mother shops for clothes. First of all she waits until they are on sale.     小题4:  And later she finds some small fault with the product and demands a further reduction. She never buys anything at the regular price. Could you imagine trying such ways in department stores in other countries?0
Attitudes to service are, of course, affected by employer’s attitudes to their workers. As American waiters heavily depend on tips, they have to provide more service. But is this fair?     小题5:    It might not be a case of “Is the customer always right?” but a case of “How much service is it fair to expect?”
A.People often point to America as an example of good customer service.
B.It is a question of expectations.
C.Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings or on Sundays?
D.Then she asks for a discount until she gets an even better price.
E. The answer, it seems, depends on which country you are in.
F. The way we shop shows the way we get along with other people.
G. However, do Europeans really want US style service?

If you like exploring the wilderness, you should read the following suggestions from search-and-rescue rangers(搜救队) in the national parks.    小题1:
Before you head out on a hike, check the weather, take plenty of water, and make sure someone knows where you’ll be and when you’ll be back. Bring clothes to keep you warm when wet, like a waterproof jacket. Avoid cotton, which traps damp.    小题2:   Take basic precaution, such as waterproof matches, a folding saw, a good knife, a first-aid kit, a flash light, and batteries.
The minute you think you might get lost, stop.    小题3:   And you should stay calm and think rationally(理性地). If you are not alone, focusing on the needs of others can help hold your own fears at bay. Keeping a sense of humor helps too.—it reduces stress and promotes creative thinking.
In general, people who try to find their own way out are far worse than those who stay put(呆在原处).    小题4:   In a wide-open area, make a signal with colorful gear, make a big X out of rock, or dig a shallow trench, which are easy to spot from above.
You can go several days without eating, so in most cases, you’d better not search for food, since there are lots of poisonous plants in the wild. But you need to stay hydrated(含水的).    小题5:   If you are lost in your car, stay there: You are more visible to rescuers. And the car provides shelter.
A.Stay visible so anyone searching can see you.
B.First, you’ve got to acknowledge you’re in trouble.
C.And you have no idea where to go.
D.The search-and-rescue people call it death clothes.
E.First of all find a shelter and stay in it in order to keep dry.

注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
In the United States, engineering is a profession that has been dominated historically by men. Even today, it’s still true that few women become civil or chemical or mechanical engineers, but that’s something www.EngineerGirl.org aims to change. Young women who visit the web site can find out about a great career choice they might not have considered.
“Women are very much underrepresented in engineering and in engineering education programs and then of course, down the road, in the engineering workforce. So only about 20 percent of engineering undergraduate degrees go to women, and then only about nine percent of working engineers are women.”
Mary Mattis in the National Academy of Engineering says the EngineerGirl website aims to reach young women around ages 11 through 14, when they are just getting old enough to start thinking about their futures.
“We know from the research that middle-school girls are at a critical point in their lives, and that it’s a time when we need to reach them, both with an understanding, increasing their awareness of interesting fields in engineering, what a wonderful productive and exciting career you can have as an engineer. But we also need to reach them at that time because you have to take certain courses, and you can’t start thinking about taking those courses when you’re a junior in high school.”
Engineering is a demanding course of study — there is a lot of science and mathematics, for many girls and even boys, that can be challenging. But Ms. Mattis says that the EngineerGirl website stresses that engineering can also be fun and exciting.
“It’s about designing things. It’s about changing the world for people. It’s about making a difference. And, in addition, you can make a good living; you can be independent economically by becoming an engineer. All of those things are messages that girls need to get.”
While most engineers go into traditional fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering, the EngineerGirl site also highlights unusual engineering careers in fields such as sports engineering and — believe it or not — chocolate engineering.
“There’s a section called ‘why be an engineer,’ and that talks about the many opportunities and increasingly different opportunities like with bio-engineering and environmental engineering, some fields that might appeal to girls who want to make a difference or have a meaning for their careers beyond earning an income.”Even if you are not a girl in the target age group, there’s a lot of interesting information on the site, including biographies of some notable women engineers.
