For years, researchers have looked into a possible relationship between heat and violence. There are conflicting results over whether there is an actual connection between rising anger and rising temperature, but the murder rate constantly increases during the months of July and August, according to the FBI’s annual crime report.
Many police chiefs say they put more policemen on the streets when the heat rises. “Calls for service always increase from May, June, July and August,” said New Bedford’s Captain Richard Spiriet. “The longer period of time you have the heat, the worse it is. It’s just the opposite in the winter time.”
Craig Anderson, a professor and specialist in social psychology at Lowa State University, argues the evidence is clear. “As the temperature goes up, people become more uncomfortable. They become easier to get angry,” he said. “That increases the possibility that a small conflict will be interpreted as more major.” Anderson conducted a couple of studies looking at crime rates over the course of several years within the same area to see when most violent crimes occurred. He found that violent crimes were more likely to occur on hot days and hot months - even hot years had higher violent rates than cold years, according to his research.
Other research shows it is not so much the physical climate, but rather the social climate, that causes increased violence. “During the summer months, people stay up later. They talk with their neighbors. They party with their friends,” said Jack Levin, director of the Brudnick Centre on Violence at Northeastern University. “There are more likely to be large numbers of people interacting, and they are more likely to argue.”
Perhaps the realization that there is a link will help people in an argument step back and say, “Let’s cool off” - both literally (字面上地) and figuratively (比喻地).

“HEARTLESS”— a word you wouldn’t want to use to describe a person. But having his heart removed was what saved Craig Lewis’ life—and what made him the first living “heartless” man.
The 55-year-old,dying of heart disease, was told he only had 12 hours to live, when Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier, doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, decided to try something new. They removed Lewis heart and replaced it with an artificial (人造的) one. Less than a week after the operation, Lewis was able to sit and speak.
Lewis kept on living like a normal person, with only one difference—he didn’t have a heartbeat. The human heart usually pumps blood through our bodies by beating regularly. By contrast, this artificial heart pushes the blood forward with two moving blades(桨叶). If you were to touch Lewis or listen to his chest, you would not feel a heartbeat. If you hooked him up to an EKG(心电图) machine, the line would be flat.
Scientists have been trying to create a working artificial heart for years. Until now, all artificial hearts either broke down or caused blocks and infections.
But after five years of hard work, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier developed this artificial heart. It is smaller and quieter than other artificial hearts and can last much longer. They tested it on 38 calves (牛犊) and all of them turned out energetic and healthy. Lewis is the first human proof that the machine is a success.
The doctors will have to work more on the device and decide on a final design before it can be widely used. The US Food and Drug Administration will also need to say that the machine is safe. But this artificial heart looks likely to bring a ray of hope to thousands of patients.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for you offer of invite me to the summer English course in your school. As for your choice between the two courses,I prefer the four-week course for 60 hours of study.Because of this would allow me more times to do some travelling and make a few new friends either.Of all the subjects I’m learning at school,I like English best.I had been learning English for 6 years but my spoken English remains poorly. So I hope to take this chance to improve it.If is possible,I’d like to stay with a family for a couple of days in order I can know some customs in England.I believe I will have wonderful time this summer.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
