Reading comprehension.     Teachers say buying homework answers online is not many in schools, but an interview with school
students shows only 10% are willing to finish their holiday homework by themselves. Their main complaint
is that the homework is too much for them to finish.
"As far as I know, many of my students have to go to all kinds of training classes during the holiday.
These take away much of their time for doing homework."
But as for the parents who are sending their children to these training classes they also say they"ve got
no choice. Here"s a view from a student"s father.
"All the other kids in the neighborhood are learning extra things. You know parents sometimes compare
their kids. I"m afraid my kid will be less successful than the others in the future."
In order to do with this situation of students copying each other"s homework, some schools have even
dropped the idea of holiday homework. Instead, they organize some interesting outdoor activities.
Educational experts say students love to learn through games or activities that they can be a part of.
They suggest schools drop the current (目前的) homework format (设计), and turn to homework that
encourages kids to get involved (参与). This way, they would no longer want to copy from each other or
buy answers through the Internet. Answer the following questions according to what you read.

Now satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any
part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大气), because this is where the weather
forms (形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the
weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive
new pictures, the meteorologists compare (比较) them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds
have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too.
In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists
could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days.
Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead (提前).

C. the weather forms there
D. the pictures can forecast the weather

Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don"t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be
felt. Only a few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one is Sichuan last year. Thousands of people died
in it. So it"s important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safely in an
earthquake.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that

some strong covers near you.
When an earthquake has ended, be careful because after-shocks may still happen. These are just as
dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it"s safe to get up.
If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can.
