plants, we will have no animals and meat. So the soil is necessary for us to live.
The top of ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. Plants grow in soil, which has a dark
color. This dark soil is humus. Dead leaves, dead plants and animals" waste make it, but this takes a long time.
When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.
All soil needs food. If we don"t give it any, the plants will be weak. Animals" waste is the best food for the
soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop (庄稼) should not be grown in the
same place every year. It is better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer
will keep the land in good condition (条件).
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river.
People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. It takes
hundreds of years to make humus, and so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, where can we grow
food?
B. plant
C. meat
D. soil
B. 土壤
C. 腐殖土
D. 粘土

water crisis (危机) than any other country in the world." And the Chinese government would raise the cities"
waste water treatment rate from 45.6% to 60% in five years.
"Because water plays such an important role in our country"s economy (经济) and people"s life, we must
pay much attention to it. We have to solve the problem before it is too late," warned Qiu. He said China should
learn lessons from developed countries. They have paid heavy costs in solving the environmental pollution."
We must take action before the city water ecosystem collapses (生态恶化)," Qiu said.
Qian Yi, professor of environmental engineering, said that two problems-the shortage of water resources
and the pollution of water cause China"s water crisis. He said China"s present water availability is still low,
about a fourth of the world average level. By 2030, the number will drop much. What"s worse, among China"s
seven main rivers, five have been seriously polluted. The worst is the Haihe River near Beijing and Tianjin.
Qiu said the government is improving the city water, controlling strictly water quality and safety. The

With so many people helping the environment, there are 9______ (仍然) serious problems of the earth.
It"s time for everybody to 10______ (尝试、尽力) his or her best to do something for the earth. Are you
trying to help? Welcome to write to us to talk about your ideas!
alert (清醒的) from being asleep. Not only does speeding up this wake-up process save time, it makes
waking up less of a struggle.
Light. Your body"s natural clock is tuned to the amount of light. Turn on all the lights in your room
right after waking up. Getting bright lights can help trick your body into thinking it is time to get out of bed.
Exercise. Put something physical right at the start of your morning. In the summer, I did a quick morning
run and found it helpful in shaking off any sleepiness. Considering the outside temperature hovers (持续)
around--- 20℃, I"ve stuck to doing a few pushups in my room. The exercise gets your heart pumping and
snaps you out of a groggy (摇摇晃晃的) state.
The 10-minute rule. If you want to stick with a consistent wake-up time, practice the ten-minute rule.
This means you commit to staying awake for at least the next ten minutes. Once you get over that initial period,
the temptation to go back to bed is usually gone.
Active work. Start your day with work that actively uses your mind. Creative activities like writing,
drawing, programming or designing work better than passive activities like reading. By focusing your mind
early you can stay focused and brush off any unwanted drowsiness (昏昏欲睡).
Don"t skip breakfast. Wake up early enough to get something to eat. Skipping meals throw your metabolism
out of balance, causing you to gain fat and lose energy. Skipping breakfast also means your blood sugar will
be low in the morning and energy levels down.
Commit to a sleep schedule. The obvious solution to combat against sleepiness is to get more rest at night.
Carrying a sleep debt throughout the week with the hopes of paying it off on the weekend is a bad strategy.
Instead, compress your work into the morning hours so you can get the 6-8 hours you need each night.
Turn up the volume. I"ve found listening to music or audio (音频的) books helpful in keeping myself awake
during the morning. Best of all, if you put on an audio book from your favorite speaker, you can get some
encouragement to start your day.
B. Seven
C. Eight
B. Your energy levels will be down.
C. You can be far away from fatness.
B. Listening to music or audio books in an acceptable volume.
C. You"d rather stay in bed and read a book than writing, drawing and programming.
B. Wake up.
C. Shake off.
B. 梳理
C. 遵守
Well, it"s not as simple as you might think.
Blood is made up of different parts, such as red blood cells (红血球), white blood cells and platelets (血小板).
Two chemical molecules (分子) on the red blood cells make people"s blood different. Scientists mark one
molecule "A" and the other molecule "B". According to which and how many molecules are on the red cell,
scientists divide blood into four types: A, B, AB and O.
Your blood type will stay the same all your life.
Scientists have been wondering if there are some links (联系) between people"s blood types and their
personalities, but they are not certain.
But some say that people with the same blood type may have things in common.
What"s your blood type? Do you have family members or friends who are of the same type as you?
Read the following.
People with Type A: They look peaceful from the outside. But they ask too much of themselves that
they may be very nervous inside. They get happy or sad easily. Sometimes they are shy but always very
careful. They can easily win people"s trust.
People with Type B: They have strong minds. Once they start a task, they don"t give up easily. They"ll
try their best to finish it and do it well. Type B people always try to make themselves different from others.
They want to do things in their own way.
People with Type AB: They are maybe the strangest among all blood types. They can be both open and
shy, noisy and quiet at the same time! They are responsible and always ready to help others.
People with Type O: They are open and good at making friends. They always start tasks but don"t always
finish them. They have lots of new ideas and love to be the centre of attention. They always strongly believe
in themselves.
2. Scientists are _______ about the relations between blood and personalities.
3. If you are with Type B, you might _______.
4. If a person is both open and shy, noisy and quiet at the same time, he or she might be with _______ blood.
5. The best title of the passage is _______ and Personalities.
