举一反三
It was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake.He had already passed sixty and brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant and his heart sorrowful.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads- one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and filled with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and devils and poisonous snake hissed ( 发嘶嘶声) and crawled (爬, 爬行).
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret like a sharp arrow struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this night.
The high church clock struck and the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”
His youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still wander on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble (绊脚) on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain(徒劳): “ Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.
Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere (干涉) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression (消沉).
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

The band started about two years ago. Jack, who was in eighth grade at the time, decided to make a homemade guitar. After some hard work, he ended up building it from a cereal box, a big ruler and some little sticks. After Jack showed his guitar to his friend Ollie, Ollie had the idea to make a band using other homemade instruments as a way to suggest people recycle old things. “We want to show people there is more to recycling than throwing things away in the rubbish box,” Jack, 16, told TFK. “You can actually recycle old things.”
Ollie, 15, plays the drums made from rubbish cans. Evan, 14, plays the guitar; Harrison, 15, plays the horns and the violin; and Austin, 16, plays the keyboard. They make up the band The Garbage-Men and play at local parties around. All the photos and ads in La Derniere Heure’s (DH) special edition(版) were given a three-dimensional effect(3D效果), but the text remained the same.

Reviewers in France spoke highly of the paper, but they said the overall result was “far from perfect”.
Editor Hubert Leclercq said it took two months to get ready for the special edition, which had a higher than normal print run of 115,000 copies for the stores selling newspapers.
“We hear about 3D cinema, television and video games, so we took up the challenge,” Mr. Leclercq told the AFP news agency.
According to PC World’s French edition, readers could get the best results by holding the paper 50cm from the eyes in a well-lit area.
“It takes a few minutes to get used to pictures in 3D,” it said, noting the limited quality of the viewing lenses(镜片).

However, as things stand today, the fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly—almost day by day. We should take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world-wide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water, one of the first step is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道), from there it returns to sea or runs into underground (地下)places.
