Everyone knows that chickens lay eggs(产卵). Most people know that all the other birds do as well. But have you ever thought about other animals that lay eggs? They include bees, snakes and some sea animals. When a mother lays eggs, many more babies can be born at once, or in a few days, because there is very little development inside the parent. Animals that do not lay eggs often have fewer babies. Animals lay many eggs because other animals may eat the babies. However, even though some of their babies are eaten, they will still have some more to continue their family.
Some animals that lay eggs do not take care of their young. Turtles come onto the beach and dig holes. Then they put their eggs in the sand and leave. A turtle mother can lay as many as 150 eggs. When the babies come out of the eggs, they must find their own way to the ocean. They must learn how to live on their own. Many young turtles get eaten by other animals.
Most eggs have an outside shell that keeps the growing animal inside safe. The egg shell also keeps the young animal from drying out. After the animal is fully developed, it comes out of the egg.
The animal grows bigger and bigger. Then it can have its own young.

Character, courage and confidence are words you might use to describe your heroes. These words can describe you! Take action as follows and you’ll be a hero, too!
Part 1: Character
Character is something that makes you the person you are like being honest, friendly, and helpful. See the chart below. On the left is our standard of good character. Write down your promise for each line on the right. Then, get a witness(证人)to sign it. Put it up where you’ll see it every day and do your best to keep it.
To build your character
Your promise
I will do my best to…

be honest and fair.
eg. I’ll tell the truth when mom asks if I have finished my homework.
be friendly and helpful.
eg. I’ll help my friend with lessons.
be polite and kind.
eg. I’ll show good manners in class.
be courageous and strong.
eg. I’ll take part in the English singing contest.
Part 2: Courage
Of course it’s going to take a lot of courage t keep your promise. Courage is challenging yourself to do something even though you think it might be hard. For each promise, find out two or three ways to help you keep it. For example, if you think that Being Honest is the hardest promise for you to keep, one of the ways might be “Tell people about my promise so that I won’t break it”.
Part 3: Confidence
Confidence is believing that you have the skills to do something. Do you have a beautiful singing voice? Are you a good painter? There are all talents that can make you feel good, as well as the people around you. Once you’ve decided what your special skill is, think about how you can use your skill to make your corner of the world a better place. If you’re good at art, try painting a picture on an old wall in your school (of course, make sure you’re allowed).

We have always been interested in the moon.2000 years ago, people already knew that the moon moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on the earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years earlier.
In 1969, moon rocks werefinally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 billion years ago, something about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, even thought our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

New Energy in the Twenty-first Century Energy from the wind.
All over the world, people use the power of the wind. It is a clean source of energy, and there is lots of it. But if the wind does not blow, there is no wind energy.
Energy from the water
When water moves from a high place to a lower place it has the power to make electricity. In Britain, waterpower produces enough energy to power a town with 40000 people. Waterpower gives energy without pollution, but people have to build dams(大坝) to use this kind of power, and building dams is very expensive.
Energy from the earth
There is heat in the rocks under the earth. Scientists use the heat to make geothermal(地热的) San Francisco gets half of the energy it needs from geothermal power. This kind of energy is cheap, but it is only possible in a few places in the world.
Energy from the sun
Solar panels(镶板) on the roofs of houses and buildings can turn energy from the sun into electricity. These panels can create enough energy to heat the whole house during winter. Solar power is clean and plentiful, but when the weather is bad, it can’t produce power.

AN ice ball shoots across the night sky, lighting up its path along the way, like a flying sun.
Ancient humans were afraid of the sight of comets(彗星). Many cultures believed that comets were messages sent by gods, and people thought these messages were warning signs for bad behavior. But today science and technology give us a better understanding of comets.
Last week, comet Ison ended its million-year-long journey as it flew straight toward the sun, melting most of the comet. It was hoped that comet Ison would survive this trip around the sun. Because once it got near Earth, it would have produced a great show of lights for us.
In ancient times, the coming of comet Ison might have scared people. However, now we can track a comet’s journey in our solar system. We can also study what they’re made of. There is even a project to launch a spacecraft onto a comet to study them further.
Although from the sky they look like great giant fireballs, comets are a collection of gas, ice, dust and small rocks. As a comet goes into our solar system, the sun’s solar winds blow some of the dust and gas away, giving the comet a tail. The average size of comets is about 10 kilometers in diameter(直径). But amazingly, their tails can be 150 kilometers long! Comet Ison’s diameter was about 5 kilometers.
Today, people don’t fear comets as much as they did before. Western countries have even developed and old tradition. When people see a comet or meteoroid(流星) shooting across the sky, they call it a shooting star, People who get the chance to see one get to make a wish. It is a tradition that lives on today.

Cities and towns in 35 countries took part. The year 2012 saw 6,950 towns and cities in more than 152 countries took part in Earth Hour movement. Last year 7,000 towns and cities in more than 154 countries took part in Earth Hour. This year, WWF is calling for people across the world to take part in Earth Hour 2014 – the biggest switch-off in history.
For the eighth year, people are being asked to turn off their lights for one hour to call attention to the issue of climate change. The WWF’s organizers say climate change is one of the greatest threats(威胁) facing wildlife and nature. They also say when it comes to save energy and money, big changes start with small steps like turning out the lights.
Earth Hour supporter Jamie Oliver has some great ideas of his own for helping the environment: “We can all make simple changes to help, like always choosinghigher-welfare(规模化养殖的) meat, and even trying to have a couple of meat-free days a week. More little steps, such as taking a shower instead of a bath, leaving the car behind and walking to work, not leaving electrical appliances on standby(备用的) and so on are the beginning of a low carbon lifestyle and a healthier world.
This year, Earth Hour is asking people to take the movement “beyond the hour”. Earth Hour is a call to stand up and get involved. We hope everyone will join us in turning off for a brighter future.
