well in exams? Would you take it?
Students at Shenzhen Luohu Foreign Language Middle School have learned to keep themselves safe
by saying "no". In fact, what those strangers want to give them are drugs (毒品). Drugs are dangerous
to your health!
"Because teens don"t know much about drugs, they might want to try them," said Zhang Dongsheng,
the director of Shenzhen Drug Control Office.
Now, many schools arrange courses or organize some activities to help students know about drugs.

fun. After taking drugs only once, he found it very hard to stop. Liang began to spend all his time and
money on drugs. Soon, he stopped going to school and started stealing. In the end, he was put in prison.

people in China were using illegal drugs last year, and 72% of them were young people. Worse still, there

There can be many reasons. Hanna changed her name to Anne because she thought it would be easier
for people to remember. On the other hand, Joseph is thinking about changing his name to an unusual
name because he wants to be different.
People have a lot of reasons for changing their names. Film stars, singers, sportsmen and some other
famous people often change their names because they want names that are not ordinary (普通的), or
that have special sound. They chose the "new name" for themselves instead of the name their parents
gave them when they were born.
Some people have another reason for changing their names. They have moved to a new country and
want to use a name that is usual there. For example, Li Kaiming changed his name to Ken Lee when he
moved to the United States. He uses the name Ken at his job and at school. But with his family and
Chinese friends, he uses Li Kaiming. For some people, using different names makes life easier in their
new country.

what do you do? You can hit the "unfriend" button (操作框) and remove (移走) him or her from your friend list. That means you won"t talk, exchange information, or see each other"s updates (更新) on the website any more.
That is a quick way to solve problems, isn"t it? In fact, "unfriend" is often used on social networking
websites. It has become so popular that Oxford University Press recently chose it as the 2009 word of the year.
Experts at Oxford University Press look at how the words of the English language change from year to
year. They choose words that are popular and have important cultural meanings.
Christine Lindberg, editor for Oxford"s dictionary program, said the word "unfriend" is popular now and
may stay popular for a long time. People understand its meaning in the online social networking context
(上下文), and also accept it as a modern verb. So it makes an interesting choice for the Word of the Year.

dog is the most useful animal in the world, but the reason why one keeps a dog has changed. Once upon a time, a man met a dog and wanted it to help him in the fight against other animals, and he found that the dog listened
to him and did what he told to. Later people used dogs for the hunting of other animals, and the dogs did not eat what they got until their master agreed. So dogs were used for driving sheep and guarding chickens.
But now the people in the towns and cities do not need dogs to fight against other animals. Of course they
keep them to frighten thieves, but the most important reason is that people feel lonely in the city. For a child, a
dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For a young wife, a dog is her child when she doesn"t
have her own. For old people, a dog is also a child when their real children have grown up and left. Now people
do not have to use a dog, but they keep it as a friend, just like a member of the family.
