阅读理解。     Have you ever listened to young children talking? They say many interesting things, like "my dad"s car
is bigger than your dad"s." and "My mum is smarter than yours."
There were three little boys, Harry, Ted and Gavin. They were always boasting (自吹自擂). Gavin
was the worst. Everything in his home was always the best or the biggest or the most expensive.
One day when they were walking to school, Harry said, "My father has a bath twice a week." Ted
spoke next, "That"s nothing. Having a bath twice a week means your father is dirty. My father has a bath
every day, sometimes twice a day."
Ted looked at Gavin. Now it was his turn. But what could he say? He couldn"t say that his father had
a bath three times a day. He walked in silence. Ted smiled to Harry, and Harry smiled back. They were
sure that for once they had won.
They reached the school gate. Still Gavin said nothing.
One day had gone. On their way home, Ted said to Harry, "We"ve won." But he spoke too early,
because Gavin said suddenly, "My father"s so clean that he doesn"t have to have a bath at all." 1. By saying "Gavin was the worst", the writer meant that _____. [     ]

my office. His face was pale (苍白) and he looked at his own feet.
David lost his father when he was two years old and lived with his mother and grandfather ever since.
But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident. His
teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on.

David didn"t say a word. As he was leaving. I put my hand on his shoulder.
"Come back next week if you like," I said.
He came and I suggested we played a game of chess. He agreed. After that we played chess every
Wednesday afternoon-in complete silence. Usually, he arrived earlier than he agreed. It seemed as if he
liked to be with me. But why didn"t he ever look at me?
"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with," I thought.
